Show THE RAIXSS LAW When the Raines liquor law was under un-der discussion in New York it was generally gen-erally opposed by the press of New York city Its friends claimed that asa as-a revenue producer it would be a great j success that the revenue the state would derive from it would be wonderful wonder-ful that wotftd be so great that other methods of taxation would scarcely be needed Such has not proven to be the case It seems to be a failure in all respects Up to the 14th instant the total amount of moneys collected in the state for the Issue of tax certificates under the Raines law exclusive of moneys collected In Otsego and Schuy ler counties is 3546370 of which one third or 1182123 is the states share It was anticipated or at least stated I by those who favored the bill that the amount of revenue that would come to I I the state from this source would be i about three times this amoqnt I The law has been a failure so far as I putting check upon the liquor traffic traf-fic is concerned It has been the excuse I ex-cuse for turning saloons in New York I into hotels M nnr r TllVtcf fnr tVio nr I pose of avoiding the Sunday provisions uL = provi-sions of the law In one respect it has been a great success It has furnished Tom Platt with patronage to more than a quarter of a million I |
