Show SPEEDING AN ARMY General Miles Tells How Rapidly 100000 Might Be Moved Washington April 2 During the morning there was a meetinjr of the joint board of the army and navy on I the plan of defense The board consists of Captain Barker Bar-ker of the navy and Colonel Wagner of the army They are considering the question of the most desirable point in the south to be used as a central base of operations In case of hostilities While they were in session they were furnished a statement showing the total to-tal strength of the Spanish navy including in-cluding a description of each ship The question the board is now considering con-sidering was two years ago the subject sub-ject of investigation by the war department i de-partment and the question of the practicability of Mobile or Tampa asa as-a base of supplies for the army con I pnntrated the south was then re viovd General Miles is of the opinion that ICOOOt men mild be transported to any point on the gulf or the Atlantic coast inthesduth within 48 hours after the call to arms That this can be done was demonstrated by the feat performed per-formed by the railroads during a recent re-cent big celebration in Washington when 100000 men were brought to the city and taken out again inside of 24 hours |
