many instances are on record of ithe discov I ery of a bonanza by chance or accident I acci-dent I The great Horn Silver mine was a chance discovery and < ever since that I lucky day has been a dividendpaying proposition and in the future promises to maintain ts record as one of the wealth producers of Utah The discoverers of the Horn Silver mine were oharcoal burners who had erected a kiln on what is now Horn Silver ground After they had finished finish-ed the struoture they proceeded to erect a corrall near it and in digging a post hole dug up some exceedingly rich chloride and horn silver ore Mining Min-ing at once superceded charcoal burning burn-ing and the output of the mine has made several fortunes Other big producing pro-ducing mines were afterwards found in that vicinity reduction works and furnaces were erected a lively mining town sDrang up as if by magic and last but not the least by any means was the building of a railroad from Salt Lake city to Frisco 1eadville Colorado at one time the greatest camp in the Centennial state owes its origin to chance which happened hap-pened as foHows Senator Tabor who was then a successful miner and then as now a friend of every miner grubstaked grub-staked two men and sent them into the then unexplored region One night < the two prospectors camped on the side hill wlhere Leaxrville now stands and having a jug of whisky along with them proceeded to make themselves as t happy and comfortable as they could i under the circumstances In the morning ii morn-ing a wet itowel would have made a pleasant adornment for their heads t and they felt anything but in a cheerful cheer-ful mood especially as the corn juicer juice-r was all gone and the demijohn empty r In disgust one of them declared that r he would go no farther and added that r they might as well dig there as anywhere any-where and acting upon this decision the men proceeded to dig a hole in the ground until such time as their grub was exhausted They had not made mUdh of an excavation t however before they uncovered r a great body of ore and this was the i starting point of the great carbonate camp of Lear ville t Gold was first discovered in Ferguson Lt son district Nevada in an accidental manner The Ferguson brothers after whom the district was afterwards named were out on a prospecting expedition ex-pedition and had discovered and located locat-ed the Monkey Wrench silver mine I One night one of their horses strayed away and while in search of it the = next morning one of the boys chanced to pick up some rich float Following t this pointer up carefully he discovered the ledge in a saddle on the top of a low mountain now known as the t Magnolia and although the property k has not been extensively developed it is known to be rich in the yellow metal Hearing of the discovery prospectors pros-pectors flocked into the district and it was not long before Wilson Ellis and Reeves discovered the April Fool and other gold properties not far from the Magnolia mine A portion of these l properties have since passed into the t hands of Captain DeLamar and have been transformed from prospects into I gold producers and the fine mill recently re-cently erected regularly sending out bars of bullion besides which a flurishing town has grown up in the vicinity of the mineand the end is not yet The mines at La Plata northeast of Ogden were discovered by a sheep herder the sharp hooffs of his flock having uncovered a body of silverlead ores in the trail Large boulders of rich silver and lead ores were afterwards after-wards found laying on the surface nearby which were broken up and marketed besides which considerable work was done and fine bodies of ore uncovered The Mayflower mine at Park City was an accidental discovery and the development of this property led to the finding of the bonanza Silver King 4 that is making its stockholders wealthy The discovery of the Ontario mine was also the result of chance A prospector pros-pector was leaving the hills bound for the then small camp of Park City and k as he was walking carelessly along striking at rocks now and then with his hammer he happened to hit a < small boulder by the side of the path He found that it was in place and It turning back examined it closer and found > that it was mineral and the outcrop of the vein The boulder Was about the size of a hat but from this seemingly unimportant discovery the great Ontario mine has grown and has since paid over 13000000 in dividends and will undoubtedly double this and morlFin time to come The great mines in the Cour dAlene country Idaho were discovered by chance Jim Wardner was a type of the many prospectors of the west and he loved to roam the hills In his avocation avo-cation of hunting fishing and prospecting pros-pecting One day late in 9he fall he left for the mountains with a small train of pack mules One night he camped near the spot where the Bunker Bun-ker Hill and Sullivan mines are now sending out their wealth of ore Before Be-fore morning it snowed and when daylight day-light came Mr Wardner proceeded to ZDund up his mules for the purpose of returning to the valley One of his mules he found industriously pawing aky the nowin order to get at the gre below and in doing so the ani a mal had scraped away the loose soil revealing the existence of what has sJnce proved to be a body of high grade J steel galena ore The lucky prospector was not slow in profiting by the discovery and the chance find afterwards made him a very wealthy man and be it said to his credit the little mule was ever afterwards well taken care of The lead deposits at Leadville west of Burnt Cork on the Union Pacific road in southern Utah were discovered a short time ago by a sheepherder and many other instances could be cited of other valuable chance finds in I permit Utah and the west if space would |
