Show AN IOWA TREASURER Captured in Honolulu and Taken Home San Francisco July William Henry Johnson the former treasurer of Muscatine county Iowa who it is alleged embezzled 50000 of municipal funds and then fled was brought from Honolulu on the steamer Australia today to-day by H W Wylie sheriff of Musca tine county To the Hawaiian officials Johnson when arrested admitted his identity He declares that his shortage short-age does not amount to more than 2000 which he says was made good by his bondsmen He claims that his arrest is the result of the efforts af his political enemies The charge against him upon which the requisition papers were obtained is forgery he having so it is charged forged the name of County officials and others to obtain the money um bezzled which is said to have been lost in land speculation After fiis flight from home Johnson 7rent first to Kansas and thence to California I When he arrived in San Francisco lie says he had but fifty cents Meanwhile Mean-while his wife through the sale of a I house and other prIvate Dronertv realized 730 of which she forwarded him 200 and he quietly departed for Honolulu Arriving there about a year ago he went to work as a solicitor on a newspaper news-paper and was promoted to be book keeper While thus employed he secured a half interest with a blind man in a stationery business and afterward bought out his partners interest and branched out as a con I fectioner j Then he began to figure prominently 1 in political and church affairs in Honolulu rendering valuable aid to the government during the recent up I rising His wife arrived on the scene about three months ago and was also admitted to the church as well as to wel the social circles of Honolulu I When Johnson arrived at Honolulu he drODDed the William un frnm IMo name but one day a friend so he u says recognized him and after noti fed the Iowa officials of his where abouts with the result that Sheriff Wylie went down on the Australia armed with the necessary requisition papers for his arrest which caused quite a sensation in Honolulu Indictment Dismissed Portland Ore July 1Th indictment indict-ment against Henry Falling president of the First National bank was dismissed dis-missed in the circuit court today Failing was indicted for not furnishing the assessor with the names of the j banks depositors in accordance with a IJa passed by the last legislature legIslture j I Judge Stephens held that the law is I unconstitutional |
