out undoubtedly by the Republican committee and I 1 Uw ich was enclosed is here repro 1 Dnmocrntiu Iiisnit I The above cut represents the latest campaign button which made its ap I pearnre on the streets of Salt Lake at the instance of Democrats immediately foliwnc the issuance of Judge Powers Pow-ers inflarcmatory interview The object 1 I of U3 creation seems to be a desire to create sympathy in favor of the Democratic Demo-cratic ticket with oldtime Liberals under un-der tll pretense that tlie Republican tfckot Is virtually the church ticket Tnnt it had a Democratic origin is plainly shown by the following affidavit subscribed and sworn to by the manufacturer manu-facturer of the button and such a dastardly das-tardly sacrilegious insult hurled at thI authorities of the Mormon church as well as to every lay member of that organization or-ganization will receive the rebuke it is entitled to at the polls from the hands of the loyal and patriotic people of our commonwealth on the day of the com thc election The Democratic party seems to take a delight in hurling insult after insult at members of the Mormon church and we believe the issuance of this button will have no beneficial effect n favor of the Democratic party by Cither Mormon or Gentile members of the Grand Old Party Doubtful voters how do YOU like this latest insult from tljp Democracy of Utah Read the fol Jofn ng affidavit and then RO to the pbs and enter your protest AFFIDAVIT Territory of Utah County of Salt Lake ss E J Swaner being duly sworn deposes de-poses and says On or about the 14th day of October 1895 Andrew J Burt a Democrat of Salt Lake City called at my office and drew a design for a large badge the size of the ordinary quarter of a dollar containing the Imitation of a sign formerly used by Mormons in sIg Utah over their commercial establishments establish-ments representing the allseeing eye with the inscription Holiness to the Lord and the words Republican Party were also written on the badge Said Burt ordered a number of badges and subsequently an order for a number or said badges was received from O W powers chairman Democratic State Central Cen-tral committee through his messenger Pjmiloyed at Democratic headquarters could not fill said order in full as Buy supply was almost exhausted S a a jeweler by profession and the a < UL l r making of badges Is a part of my business 11 busi-ness E J SWANER Subscribed and sworn to before me this 17th day of Otober A D 1895 THOMAS HULL Seal Notary Public My commission expires Nov 19 1866 Judge Powers Interviewed With relation to the foregoing circular circu-lar I desire to say said Judge Powers yesterday that the first I ever saw or knew of the badge referred to was on the streets of Sail Lake and i was worn by Doc King a member cf the Oquirrh club A day or two later believing that it was ama a-ma tr gotten out by the Republican party for the purpose of throwing odium upon the Democratic party I called the attention of several prominent promi-nent gentlemen to the matter in headquarters head-quarters Messrs Rawlins Judd Mc Daniel Monson and Tribune Reporter Caine among others and we thereupon sent to ithis man Swaner for I think seven of them for use by our speakers I if we found that it was a Republican campaign document The messenger returned with one saying that Swaner said he had no more and would make us a present o that I have had nothing to do with i as I have heretofore stated at Ogden and the man who says that I have is a liar I do not ridicule any mans religion I would not under any circumstances circum-stances stoop to the dirty work that the Republican party is doing in circulating circu-lating this circular and I call upon all good citizens everywhere to vote down a party which i so ready to slander a man connected with another party for the purpose of obtaining political po-litical gains I I have a friend in the territory I of Utah in the Democratic party I now call upon that friend personally to work > harder than ever before that there maybe I may-be such a vote of the people against a party stooping to such desperate and mean methods that like efforts will not II be again attempted As to the man Swaner who has made the affidavit he is said to be a jeweler in town He I has received orders from this committee commit-tee for the Rawlins Caine Roberts I and Thatcher campaign badge He has been paid for the same and as to him I I I say that a man willing to make an affidavit such as he ha ought not to have the support I sup-port of any Democrat and everyman I every-man who is a Democrat should decline I to buy his badge I I learn from Swaner that George f Cannon and Ben Rich procured the affi j davit to be made and the circular to I be issued Whatever a man might say 1 of these men would be inadequate I leave it to the voters of Utah to pass upon the manliness ot sucn men 1 ao not believe that George 1 Cannon knows what decency in a political campaign consists of A Iart Eliminated Mr Swaner was seen and stated that the affidavit was procured by George M Cannon and Ben E Rich that he told these men that Judge Powers had sent for seven only and had procured but one He states that he made I only one dozen in all Swaner also stated that the affidavit as he signed it stated that Judge Powers procured but one badge Andrew Burts Statement Afterwards a Herald reporter found Andrew J Burt who made the following follow-ing statement UA day or two after the agitation regarding the priesthood meeting commenced com-menced I was talking with the Republicans Repub-licans who were bantering me about the church being with their party The discussion ran along for some time when finally I said well if your party has the church behind you then you should have a badge showing the fact Doc King a Republican and member of the Oquirrh club replied If you will design a badge Ill pay for i and wear it This r agreed to do and going go-ing to ll Swaners place put a quarter quar-ter of a dollar on a piece of paper drew a circle from it and then put in I the design Swaner made three badges I and the next day Doc King called and paid for them I I want to say most emphatically I that neither Judge Powers nor another an-other Democrat knew a thing about this I all originated exactly s I have related i Doc ICing Confirms I Doc King was next seen and he confirmed I con-firmed Mr Burts statement in every 1 detail I told Burt said King that j if he would design a badge I would I wear it and pay for it We got three I and I paid Swaner for them myself Judge Powers never heard of it at all until the evening when I got the badge and was wearing it I chanced to meet him and he noticed the big badge and asked what it was That was the first he ever know or heard of it George I Cannon intended the circular circu-lar to help his party but it will do a great deal of harm for there are hundreds hun-dreds of honorable Republicans in Utah who would rather see their party beaten and honorable Democrats win than to achieve victory toy such dishonorable dis-honorable methods The above should be a warning to Democrats everywhere in the territory The Republican committee during this week and on election day will start all sorts of stories afloat They will bring In the religion of the dominant people peo-ple they will < bring in the names of the I first presidency they will appeal to any I kind of a prejudice and set all sorts of I stories going The slander in this case is an object lesson A chairman who I would stoop to the use of an affidavit I under such conditions and who would strike out the part of it that explained everything cannot be believed and any I roorbacks may start may be branded I as false I Judge Powers took prompt action i esterday when the matter was brought to his attention He telegraphed to I every county chairman in the territory warning him of the intended use of the I circular and denouncing it as absolutely abso-lutely false and dishonest This intelligence intel-ligence he asked should be distributed to ever part of the counties concerned He called upon Democrats to work harder than ever in view of such things While he was writing out a telegram the messenger came from the telephone tele-phone and announced that Chairman George M Cannon wished to speak to Judge Powers in relation to an agreement agree-ment for election day Judge Powers promptly replied Tell Mr Cannon that I do not care I to talk with him Say that I will not speak to him now or hereafter or make any kind of an agreement with him I on election matters or anything else Tell him that a man who would send out such a circular as this is absolutely beneath contempt I So for the first time in the history of Utah the campaign managers of the I f two parties will make no agreement about workers at the polls and such I I other things as are generally a matter I of agreement asreement J 4 i t JL |
