Show GOVERNOR PRINCE COMING WILL ATTEXD THE SILVER COX KERBXCES AS A DELEGATE Presents Some of the Importnat Issues Is-sues That Are at Stnfce He Believes Be-lieves That the Educational Process Pro-cess in the East Is Developing Sentiment Rapidly But That the Work Cannot Btf Insllcd Too Vigorously Vig-orously at the 1reseiit Time Among the many prominent people who will visit Salt Lake during the Silver conference con-ference and take part in the proceedings of the convention is L Bradford Prince late governor of New Mexico The dis tnglshed gen teman will reach this city on either Tuesday or Wednesday mornIng morn-ing He is now in Denver and in conversation conver-sation with a Republican reporter on Friday Mr Prince said that he considered this conference a step in the right direction di-rection as it looked to the education of the people of the east on the financial question and he hoped that i might have important results The circulation broadcast broad-cast throughout the east of sound financial finan-cial literature was of cours necessary and would have a large imiuence but he was particularly anxious that an active propaganda should be established in New York city by means of u regular series of weekly meetings at ChlcKerlncr hal or some similar place New York Is at present the center of the single gold standard sentiment I is there that i should bo attacked Whatever What-ever may he the case with some classes of business men or politicians there I is certainly true that the great body of the people are not goldites from malevolence or dishonesty but simply from ignorance of the principles and effects involved while on many subjects eastern people are better informed than those of the west they have as a rule given no atten tion whatever to the financial question now pressing upon the country the newspapers news-papers which they read do not enlighten them and so ono very rarely finds 1 man there possessed of the knowledge of the subject west which is almost universal in tIe westWhat What is needed is a thorough discussion dis-cussion of the matter before the people The continuance of hard times in spite of the measures which they were told would a cure has made them far more willing to listen and consider than they were a year or two ago I a series of meetings could be held weekly in New xory they would attract large audiences and the newspaper reports would coverall cover-all the country east reprts Alleghenies The addresses should be made by men thoroughly informed and of high reputa tion and representing in turn every shade I of politics There are at least a dozen senators and as many representatives I each of whom could well fill an evening I besides those not in Congress and there can be no doubt that such men would be j willing to devote the necessary time to the object from the most patriotic mo tives < tritc Arouse Eastern Sentiment I believe continued Mr Prince that in this way we can arou s and revolutionize revolu-tionize eastern sentiment Sn this great question long before the year is ut The American people are quick to learn when I facts are properly presented to them They will soon see that honest money is the stable unchanging currency of historic bimetallism and that the dis honest dollar is the one which is continually contin-ually increasing in value since 1873 When the people are all right there will be no trouble with the politicians and party leaders They will almost fall over each other in endeavoring to show that they were always in favor of bimetallism bimet-allism The duty of he hour is to educate edu-cate the people and that can best be done by such a propaganda as I have suggested suggest-ed There is nothing difficult about it It will run itself as soon as started The singletax people with one idea only to promulgate have kept up such a series of meetings in New York for years and have affected public opinion very considerably consid-erably thereby Surely with a great sub ject like bimetallism which affects the welfare of every citizen in the land as I the subject there can be no difficulty We do not need meetings in the west r It is simply throwing away powder Our people are thoroughly informed on this issue If General Warner and Mr Sib I Icy had gone to New York instead of coming to Denver it seems to me that i would have been of much more service I I am in hopes that the conference at Salt Lake will take action for the immediate imme-diate starting of such ait educational campaign in the east and especially in New York city as its center I is not to be expected that the great parties will act in advance of public sentiment We must educate the people first and then line the party organizations will all fall into lineGovernor Governor Prince received a telegrapnlc invitation to address the Republican league convention of Utah on Tuesday and hopes to be able to reach Salt Lake in time to accept I |
