Show BIG SENSATION AT THE GAPITAL Meade Hazleton Trouble Has Stirred tip Diplomatic Circles ADMIRAL WAS VERY UGLY Showed a Disposition to Ignore the Minister Hazlctou HIccJi Depressed Over the Condition of Affairs and Speaks Frankly in Defence of Himself Although Reserved in Regard to Departmental flatter Animus of the Admiral Washington May 12Tbe diplomatic trouble concerning United States Minister Min-ister Hazelton resulting from serious charges made by Admiral Meade as given exclusively in the Associated Press dispatch was the absorbing theme of naval and diplomatic circles today Mr Hazelton has received a dispatch from Hon B Smalley of Vermont through whose influence he was appointed minister to Venezuela saying he would arrive in Washington tomorrow to give personal attention to the case It is now known definitely that Secretary Gresham in a cable dispatch to the minister called for his resignation The minister desires to see the specific charges and before tendering his resignation will endeavor to have his side of the case presented to President Cleveland Assistant Secretary I Sec-retary Uhl expected the written resignation I resig-nation to be tendered yesterday and i asked for an interview with the minister minis-ter in the morning and again at 31 oclock but Mr Haselton asked that action be deferred until the arrival of Mr Smalley with a view to putting i in a defense to the charges He says he feels that his future standing is at I stake and this is more to him than 1 the retention of his diplomatic mission j which he will undoubtedly resign Gresltaii Han Regrets The correspondence leading up to j Mr Hazeltcns return has been brief and entirely by cable Secretary Greshams dispatch stated that facts I had come to the knowledge of the President which compelled him to allj for the ministers immediate resignation resigna-tion Mr Gresham spoke with aeep I regret of the necessity for this course i j No specific charges were mentioned Mr Hazeltons dispatch in answer i asked permission to leave for Washington i i Washing-ton tO resign His purpose vas to i ccme here and learn the charges bits by inadvertance he requested that he might return to resign This last phrase was construed to mean a resignation i resig-nation and accordingly Assistant Secretary Sec-retary Uhl has asked that the resigna i tout be submitted in accordance with j the dispatches Mr Iiazelton is much depressed over j the condition of affairs He speaks I frankly in defense of himself although i reserved as to departmental matters He referred today to several further features of Admiral Meades visit to j Venezuela showing in the judgment i I of the minister the animus of the charges One of the occurrences was I in the presence of President Crespo f j of Venezuela Minnie Was Fresh i I It had been arranged said the 1 j minister that I should pursue the usual course of officially presenting the j 1 admiral to the president When however i how-ever the president entered unexpeet etlly Admiral Ieade advanced to him I shook his hand and began speaking to him in Spanish The president was i I noticeably surprised knowing the ar i I rangements made for an official pres j i entaticn At the first opportunity I j 1 stepped forward and therepucn formally 1 form-ally introduced Admiral Meade to the j president and the admiral presented 1 his San otlicers It was evident the admiral was nettled that his informal I t greeting of the president i had not sufficed suf-ficed although it was contrary to the II honor due a president and contrary to I express arrangement I He Is Also f rly I Mr Hazelton also speaks of his trip from Caracas to La Guayra on the I train bearing the admiral at which time the admiral did not call on the minister as is said to be due from an admiral to the representative of the United States government When La Guaya was reached Mr Hazelton says Sunday prevented his calling Immediately Im-mediately on the arrival of his flagship flag-ship as the rules of the navy forbid salutes and like courtesies on Sunday I When he called the next day Monday and was asked to the ward room Mr Hazelton said Admiral Meade demanded de-manded peremptorily Why did you not call yesterday The minister says he avoided a controversy con-troversy by saying he preferred not to call on Sunday knowing the fleet would remain until Monday night I He says the courtesy shown him on the flagship was so scant that It was evident that his departure was desired by the admiral He received however I the usual salute of seventeen guns due a United States minister Captain Glass of the cruiser Cincinnati Cin-cinnati commanded the gig conveying him to the shore and in the course of the trip Captain Glass stated the rules of the navy forbade Sunday salutes and like courtesies Mr Hazelton will seek to answei the charges and if he prevails upon I the department to withdraw the request re-quest for his resignation he will seek I a leave of absence |
