Show TIlE 3IEXICAX BEEF BUGABOO Some Republican papers near at home and afar off have been trying to make a great deal out of a very small I matter which Is not surprising neither is it uncommon with that class of journal During the agitation over the rise in the price of beef the extra regulations in reference to the importation impor-tation of cattle from Mexico were removed re-moved by the administration in order to relieve the market somewhat as it was alleged that the scarcity of home raised beef cattle was the cause of the advance in the retail price of meat The cry was raised at once that the design was to rum the trade and the I country was startled with the alarm j of a flood of Mexican cattle just as the fear was aroused a short time ago that there would be a flood of cheap goods from abroad as the consequence of the Wilson tariff reform measure The trouble seems to have been In the alleged brains of those who raised the alarm The Mexican sort of stock is not in great demand In the markets of the United States The animals brought over the line have to be kept a considerable time before they are permitted to be slaughtered andwhat is not generally understood or taken into accountthere is still a duty of JO per cent upon them One by one even the roses fade and one by one the flowery fallacies of the Republican alarmists perish The beef industry is not ruined by Mexican Mexi-can cattle and one more Republican bugaboo is knocked on the head by the poleax of truth Next |
