Show TAKE yO CHANGES I The wisdom of the action of tlhe Democratic state convention in expressing ex-pressing the choice of the party for United States Senators is recognized more and more as time and circumstances circum-stances bring it into prominence The commendation of iron W J Bryan of Nebraska expresses the opinions of the large 1 majority of Democrats and is conceded to be right by not a few straight Republicans In voting for Democrats as members of the legislative < Assembly the people of Utah will know what that means in reference to the United States senator ship It means the election by the legislature islature of Hons J Lc Rawlins and Moses Thatcher to the Upper House of Congress In voting for Republicans for the Legislature no one will know what that means as to United States Senators It may mean Trumbo or Crane Tom Dick Harry or Bob No one can tell The matter is left in perplexing uncertainty un-certainty and if the Tribunes estimate esti-mate of ats own party be true then boodle may determine the question and the California barl may foe the deciding force Some Republicans affect to deride tlhe idea of the Colonels candidacy Not so others however and the latter class cut no inconsiderable figure in their party Apropos of this we find the California Califor-nia papers speaking of Trumbo seriously serious-ly as the probable choice of the Republicans Repub-licans of Utah for the senatorship And even the San Francisco Examiner Democratic paper though it is mentions men-tions him as one of the examples of California senatorial products In an editorial headed California the i Mother of Senators several sons of the Golden State who have gained senatorial sen-atorial honors from different places are mentioned and the opinion is expressed express-ed that Utah will add to the list And It says of Trumbo and his prospects California looks on with more than customary interest while the young commonwealth of Utah puts on her new clothes and assumes the dignity of statehood It ds not impossible that this interest springs in a measure from the higfti consideration with which our lIttle sister regards our distinguished fellow citizen Colonel Isaac Trumbo who is once more irevisitinigr the glimpses glimp-ses of the moon dn San Francisco and is even seen sitting under the shadow of Judge Murphys awful brow Of course when we speak of Mr Trumbo Colonel Trumbo as our fellow citizen citi-zen we do not mean to claim him wholly as our own except in i that broader sense under which we must all bow to one flag all answer to one Drotherlhood of states Nevertheless time was and not so long ago when San Francisco and California owned him and he owned no little of California Califor-nia It is only the other day when the political thorriblower might have pointed point-ed to him with pride as a warhorse of the Republican party in California and indeed he has a warlike name I like beat of drum If those persons who allude to the Colonel with a sneer or a jeer really think he is not in the race they are badly fooled They will find he is in it with a vim before the light is finished The only thing that will effectually ef-fectually bar him out is a Legislative Assembly with a majority of Democrats Demo-crats The question for bona fide i Utonians to decide is shall we make sure of Rawlins and Thatcher for the United States Senate or leave the chances open for Trumbo Crane or somebody now unmentioned or unknown un-known |
