| Show UNITY CLUB An InicreatinsxAddreas By Mills Long Lat ErrcnluK A large and cultured audience greeted Miss Jenne l Long at the Unity club last evening A number of educators were seen there notably Dr Millspaugh who listened with marker attention to the ladys address on Common Sense Reading in the Public Schools Miss Long made a plea for natural expression as opposed to the stilted style or reading especially In public schools I ask that a person be aCle said she to read a newspaper or magazine articM a committee report or a scriptural passage understand ingJy Is that asKing too much 7 The poorest readers she said are lawyers ministers school teachers and recitationists The lecture contained con-tained many strong arguments which were made with Qua force and grace At the conclusion of the address Miss Tit sang The Life of Love is but a Day with violin obligate by Mr Berghol Mr Leslie Ames accompanying accom-panying her at the piano She bowed her acknowledgement of an encore By special request Miss Long favored the audience with a reading She gave Aldrlchs In the Atelier in a finished manner which won for her a hearty encore She responded to this wiih an amusing story of how a young man kissed his stetr by young Miss Cumorah Smith clayed Floor shelms Elevation receiving applause uEHevton receiving merited Dr Utter Miss Long Dr Mllls paugn and Mrs Clarence Bradley discussed dis-cussed some practical points in relation rela-tion to reading The programme for the next meeting of the club which will tale place on the 13th Inst consists of a discussion of current even s by Mr Gustave Kroeger and Mr D 11 Straup and a book review by Miss Rose Larson On the 20th inst the club will provide an Evening with Utah Composers at the First Congregational church |
