Show CZWEO ALSO Italian Consul at TJcnvv Desires Information In-formation Denver Colo March 13Governor McIntyre today received simultaneously simultane-ously from the authorities at Washington Washing-ton and the Italian consul at this point Inquiries concerning the Walsen burg lynchlngs The communication from Washington was a telegram from the acting secretary of state asking for particulars and that from Acting Consul Cuneo at this point a demand for protection for any Italian citizens who might be in danger in Walsen burg Immediately steps were taken by the governor to comply with both requests and telegrams were sent out To the sheriff of Huerfano county the governor gover-nor directed a telegram demanding full particulars of what had occurred together to-gether with a statement of the feeling at the moment prevalent To Washington the governor telegraphed tele-graphed such particulars as he then had and promised the fullest protection protec-tion to all He also stated that it is probable the Italians lynched are American citizens that he had directed direc-ted the sheriff to protect his prisoners and maintain order and that he had a report from the colonel commanding the nearest place that he could put I I troops aboard the cars in two hours Militia to Rport Quickly following the sending of these dispatches went others to Pueblo One was to the commander of the militia forces stationed there and the other to the railroad company The militia officer was ordered to report immediately and exactly on what notice he could put his command in the field and the railroad authorities were asked in what space of time a special train could be furnished and sent to the scene of the riots It was found that within three hours of an order Issuing the Pueblo troops could be landed in Walsenburg Following is a copy of the commun ications passing between Governor Mc Intyres department and the acting consul Denver March 13 To His Excellency A W Mclntyre Governor of Colorado SIrI have it from reliable author ity that at or near the town ol Wal senburg Colo this morning about 2 oclock two Italians were taken from the jail by a mob and lynched and also that there are seven or more men supposed to be Italians still in the custody cus-tody of the authorities of Huerfano county who are threatened to be treated In a like manner I I Therefore I Joseph Cuneo acting Italian consul for this district call upon you as governor of this state to Ito j I I take such steps be as may necessary to insure protection for the life and property of the Italians in the custody of the authorities in the eaid Huer fano county Very respectfully your obedient servant J CUNEO N D Acting Italian consul Tile Governors Reply The following is the reply SIrReplying to your communication communica-tion of March 13 just received I have the honor to say that I have telegraphed tele-graphed to the sheriff at Walsenburg for information concerning the alleged lynching and to protect his prisoners I and to maintain order within his jurisdiction juris-diction and will take such further steps as are necessary and can betaken be-taken with the authority conferred upon me by the law to insure protection protec-tion to the life and property of the Italians in custody in said Huerafano county the same as if they were American citizens I have further the honor to say that It is not yet known to me that the Italians in question arc not American citizens Respectfully your obedient servant ser-vant A W McINTYRE Governor To J Cuneo acting consul Denver Colo From th Sheriff The report of Sheriff Oilalley io the governor related that one Italian had been killed enroute to Walsenburg and that two escaped Whether they are dead or not he did not know Two others were killed in the jail Governor McIntyre Immediately sent the following telegram in reply Walter OMalley sheriff Huera tano county Walsenburg Colo Wire I me at once whether you are maintaining maintain-ing order and protecting prisoners and whether you have sufficient force to I prevent further mob violence and whether excitement has abated You are expected to prevent recurrence of violence to prisoners Take every precaution pre-caution to protect life and property and as soon as possible ascertain who composed the mob doing the lynching I and as soon as practicable arrest them I A W IfdNTTRE Governor I |
