Show TAUBENECK IS SIIFFNECKED Populist Leader Thinks He Weighs a Ton HIS VIEWS ARE GIVEN LOOKS AS THOUGH HE WOULD BE OVERTHROWN Under No Consideration He Says Will I Endorse Bryan and Sew all at the Convention on July 22 His Views as to What Other People Will DoST Do-ST LOUIS July 18 Chairman Tau beneck of the PeoDles party national committee who has had nothing to say for publicatioi since the Chicago convention con-vention has at last broken his silence and submitted to an intreview with a representative of the Associated Press Are you in favor of the Populists endorsing the Democratic ticket nominated nomi-nated at Chicago he was asked No under no consideration will I vote to endorse Bryan and Sewall at the Populist convention on July 22 That would mean the surrender and destruction of the Peoples party organization organ-ization Have you any idea what the Populists Popu-lists will do towards combining all the elements opposed to the gold standard I in the coming campaign I believe the Peoples party convention conven-tion will favor the idea of nominating a candidate for president and vice I president and then combine the votes of the two parties on one set of electors elect-ors This can be done without the sacrifice sac-rifice of prmcioles or our organization and will also unite the elements opposed I op-posed to the gold standard Do you believe that if the Peoples party national convention should endorse en-dorse Mr Bryan that the entire vote of that party would go to Bryan at the polls next November No if the Peoples party national convention should endorse Bryan and I Sewall the leaders could not deliver more than SC per cent of the Populist vote throughout the country Members of the Peoples party possess a strong I individuality and will not follow their leaders if they attempt to lead them I against their will The stay at home I I vote in the Peoples party would be large enough to defeat Bryan in many of the western states I Do you think if the Peoples party I should nominate a candidate for president i I presi-dent and vcepresident and then combine I com-bine on electors that the entire vote could be polled for such electors I Yes I believe the full Populist I strength could be polled at the November Novem-ber election for the electors This in my opinion is the only possible way to defeat McKinley at the polls next November No-vember Since the Chicago convention I1 I have communicated with the Populists Popu-lists throughout the United States and I know the Democratic ticket nominated I at Chicago will not be endorsed by our I convention next week I Executive Committee Meets ST LOUIS July 18The national executive I ex-ecutive committee of the Populist party held a meeting behind closed doors today to-day and transacted considerable business busi-ness of a routine nature Chairman Taubeneck presided and those present were J H Turner Washington D C George F Washburn Boston J H Dais Texas George F Gaither Ala I bama and V O Stnckler Nebraska a bare quorum D O Rankin of Terre HauteInd Ignatius Donnelly of Hastings MJnn and Lawrence McParlin of Lockport N Y had not arrived but came in tonight to-night The disposition of the tickets of the national convention was decided upon Each national committeeman will be given five and each delegate and alternate according to thA fjistnnpf ho lives from St Louis one or more No one will receivemore than three nearby I delegates getting the largest number 1 Five thousand tickets that had been awarded to the Business Mens league were bought back at 33 13 cents each These tickets will be sold at the rate of 1 each one ticket admitting to three sessions if there are that many a day i i None will be given away and Sen i I geantatArms McDowell is to be required re-quired to account for each ticket used i Badges for the delegates will be sold I for 50 cents each and those for alternates alter-nates for 25 cents The proceeds from I the sale of badges and tickets will go into the campaign fund the expectation I being that several thousand dollars will be realized for the tickets and badges |
