Show THE CUTTHROAT TROUT He Can Bent an Ostrich on Feeding mid Has Swallowed a Flaslc of Whisky Talking about fish said Billy Raw linson the wellknown expert fisherman fisher-man of Truckee I guess the cutthroat I trout has the most uncommon appetite lof any member of that family You I take a three or fourpounder and he I can give an ostrich or billy goat cards and spades and then swallow the whole jackpot I have seen them with woods watersnakes cigar stumps and buckskin buck-skin crackers from whips stored away in their insides But what particularly brings this subject to mind is a thing that happened on Donner lake recently re-cently We had made a rather poor catch in the morning and were just setting out again after having had dinner at the head of the lake when old Albert gave I us a nice flask to bring luck We strolled down to about Darronvllles place and caught several fine fish Then upon celebrating we found the contents of Alberts fiask rather warm I so a stout line was tied to its neck and j f r the bottle thrown overboard to cool off offWe We then headed over toward Echo Rock and had not been there more than half an hour when we saw a whopping big trout just aplayins horse on top of the water He would jump into the air and shake himself roll over and over and then shoot about like a streak of lightning We j could not guess the cause of his hilarity hilar-ity until one of the crowd went to pull I up the bottle and found only its neck j We then concluded that Mr Trout had i i nailed the bottle and got clean drunk on its contents After trying unsuccessfully all the I ways we knew to catch that fish we had an inspiration We steamed back to Alberts got another flask and tied a heavy line with three treble hooks onto I When we got back our game i was still having his fun We took a circle around him and then dragged the bottle close up He saw it and made for it but missed I three times before we got him He weighed four been pounds and in his stomach we found not only the remains of our first flask but the second one and a corkscrew cork-screw with which we opened the bpttle and drank to our success from its undamaged contents The bottle and corkscrew are now on exhibition in Truckee San Francisco I Fran-cisco Call I |
