Show I INSURGENTS ALL RIGHT BETTER EQUIPPED TODAY THAN EVER BEFORE Not Less Than 60000 Men Now in the FieldBut Few Americans Are Among Them Boston March Following are excerpt ex-cerpt from a column interview printcii here tonight with Dr J Herbert Stephens Steph-ens recent a colonel in the Cuban army armJ insurgent army is a little better equipped today than ever before and I should say that at the present time there are not less than 60000 men in the field Food has been scarce at times but when plentiful as at present consists of beef and banaias Beef is plentiful on the island where cattle run wild in hundreds of thousands The men round them up kill and dress a bunch of cows Much ki the beef is wasted but the supply seems unlimited As far as I was able to observe there are few Americans in the Cuban army and le stories of whole comranies are unfounded The Cuban like the Spaniard Span-iard is suspicious of Americans and jealousy prevails all over the island Americans and Cubans do not affiliate I should say that about 5 per cent of the men in the army are colored I There are few colored men with General Gomez but in Sandiago de Cuba there are many colored soldier some ot whom ma colore are officers There s not much sickness In the rule army as 2 rle Another Cuban Expedition New York March 13A World special spec-ial from Miami Fia says A large Cuban expedition got off late yesterday afternoon between here and I Carryfords Reef Captain William I Lewis is in command of it A large quantity of arms and ammunition am-munition and a ton of dynamite are on board The name of the vessel is not yet known here Captain Lewis was in command of the steamer Three Friends when that vessel exchanged shots with the Spanish cruiser I |
