Show SPIRITED I T SECOND I Walker Got It But L Veil Was Well Up Matt H Walker was nominated zs a candidate for the board of education for the Second municipal ward at a meeting held in Unity hal lat evenIng even-Ing I was a well attended event and the contest was a spirited one Mr alter defeating the other candidate William B La Veie by only 22 votes j The meeting was not in the best of humor when i convened There was 1 a hitch about the hal whiehno one pretended to explain ChaIrman Apple by of the Republicans alleging he was not to blan1e and intimating that Lambert of the Delratc committee was the person in error The janitor would not open the door even when the time for the meeting had arrived declaring Parley P Christensen was the fellow who had the matter in charge Sever ladies charged on Parley who stated he helped rent the building but that was all he knew about it A H Kelly who appeared early gave the janitor orders concerning con-cerning the opening and when the man came to he door and would have permitted the crowd to enter forbade him becu he said I wfi not time There was considerable lad blood in the crowd and threats oi holding an outdoor meeting would hare been put into execution but fc the counsel of wiser heads Finally the lord high janitor opened the doors per order o 111 Farnsworth who he sid instructed in-structed him to wait until 8 oclodt and the people filed in William P Appleby called the meeting meet-ing to order and declared nominations for chairman were in order Gus Bachmn placed the name of G B Blakely before the meeting fr that I position and Blaltely would have been selected by alamation had not J U I Eldege jr placed Colonel Nelsons name before the meeting On a rising vote Blakely receive 101 votes and Nelson 59 Nelsn D H Peery jr name J U EI dredge jr secretary but Jodey de dined saying he was going home early I Then W F Colon the retiring member mem-ber of the board was proposed and accepted the secretaryship The air was full of motions for time but after the heaps of words had cleared away it was decided to vote by ballot the voters registering where they lire and their names and that two sets of tellers be appointed to take the vote The judges appointed were J E McKnght Causten Browne A H Kelly George Westervel P P Christensen and Mr Hamer This work done the convention tendered ten-dered Mr Colon a vote of thanks and decided to limit all speeches to one minute Wiey Brown nominate lIr Walker and Colon seconded the nomination Mr Hamer nominated W B La Veie and he was seconded by C M Jackson On the ballot Walker received 10 votes and La Viele 82 and the former was declared the nominee D H Peery jr on behalf of Mr La Veie moved to make the nomination nomina-tion unanimous and asked all to support sup-port the nominee on election day as against aU who might be nominated The convention then adjourned I |
