Show THE MINING EXCHANGE t Fancy Prices Paid For Seats On the Board + BOUGHT BY EASTERN CASH WONDERFUL mTEREST TAXEN m MINIUG AFFAIRS Roist For 3oe Bowers ExtensionThe Week In the itUintlh County AsphaltumManufacture of Paint Bond On the Blue BellThe Star ConsolidatedCanyon City Gold L That the permanency and usefulness 01 the Salt Lake Mining exchange is as good as assured was demonstrated yesterday yes-terday when the organization offered for sale at public auction four meal t berships or seats on the board and the fancy prices brought for these seats t1 were not only a surprise to the meal t hers of that body and the public at large but was the topIc of conversation in busIness haunts durIng the after L < noon and the affair was telegraphed the world over through the medIum of the Associated Press The initial bid received for the first seat offered was 100 this figure was raisei amid great excitement until the 200 mark was reached and the dealers deal-ers were on the tiptoe of expectatIon l hen the bidding advanced above this figure and when the membershIp was knocked down to D H Peery jr the air was filled with applaue The second sec-ond seat drew out active bidding and contrary to all expectations it brought even more than was paid for the first menership and was awarded to E L I Sheets of Sheets Thompson for 235 There was a scramble when the third seat was offered and the first bid was t 2OO indicating that there would be some tall scrapping for thIs membership member-shIp and bIdders were encored for their nerve and sand time and time again as the figure reached the 300 mark and it was here that the crier stopped to announce that further bIds of less than 250 ould not be entertained but this was not necessary as 10 and 5 bIds were pouring in so rapidly that it was not long before the applicants for exchange ex-change privileges had reached the handRome sum of 315 in the bidding Prof W II Tibbals capturing the prize Short work was made of the fouth seat the plum being secured by Mr Sheets at the same fiure315 the amount Of aggregate sales footing up to 1100 tIle receipt of which will add greatly to the fund now in the treasury treas-ury of the association It had been believed that these seats I would go to Salt Lake business men I but In this many were mistaken as it vas outside money that corralled these memberships the incident showing in a forcible manner tIle interest that is being taken abroad in the exchange Mr Peery in speaking of his purchase pur-chase stated to a representative of The Herald that it was made on a telegraphIc order from a gentleman in the east whose name for good and sufficient reasons he could not divulge at the present time Prof Tibbals made the statement that the seat purchased by hill was for the firm of Mills lanhard of Boston who are so hen i1y interested in the Chloride Point mine on Lion Hill the Overland at Sunshine and the Picnic at Silver City while Mr Sbets while refusing to give the nines of hIs clients at the present time announced that the two memberships member-ships secured by him were also for eastern gentlemen ThE > stock exchange has enjoyed a phenomenal and legitimate growth during dur-ing the present year and it is hard tn foresee what is still in store for it although there is11o doubt but that it 1111 be the instrument of much good to the business interests of Salt Lake and the upbuilding of the great mining industry in-dustry of the state The exchange has had aU kinds of eeriences during its existence Start iig out in pretty good shape business was good for a few months when interest in-terest began to dwindle The board was ushered into existence with a brass blnd 3ccomIaniIlent and with a grand spread in the room just east of the Cullen Cul-len hotel A few months afterward it took up its abode on Commercial street and here business was often so slack that but a few members were present + 1 rc > n in mOl IntAYlI T1 one u or two lone spectators only were in ttendanle to grace the lobby These I well trying times for the exchange and to better tR condition a move vas mace to the basement of the Atlas I block whEe business began to im prO e and in time the place became 51 crowded tht another move had to I be made this time to its present com 110dious quarters in the building south of and adjoining the Walker bank building and since getting fully in staled in this desirable locality business busi-ness has improved at such a rate and so much interest has been taken in the daily call that toe pIt is always filled with members now numbering 65 hlch is the limit and it is often that the lobby is crowded by interested ectators and dealers to the number of several hundred while the business I ef the call runs up into the transfering I of from 50000 to 100000 shares of stork l ith sale values touching Dearly 20000 I or ovr for each session of the board i the interest being so great that the I value of membershI > > has steadily increased creased until as recorded above businESS I busi-nESS men are anxious and ready to par eninglr high prices for the privilege ot Ging business in the pitand the I I enl is not yet
