Show N NE W YORK SOLDIERS I A Battalion of Volunteers Passes Through Salt Lake 4 THEYiARE FIOIn HONOLULU j > t THE TROOPEES ARE NEARLY ALL NATIONAL GUABDSIIIEN pAre + I Are On Their Way to Albany Camped in a Unlisi1thy Spot and Last Sevente Through Sickness Crowd at tho Rio Granda Western West-ern Depot td See Them bf2 + Yesterday a battalion of the First New York volunteers passed through Salt rake ert route from San Francisco to Albany N yi This battalion has I I been stationed at Honolulu for about three months and Is now on its way home The troops were divided into two sections the first arriving 111 Salt Lake in the morning and the second in the afternoon On the first section were companies I under Captain McIntyre McIn-tyre First Lieutenant Decker and eec ond Lieutenant Nickerson and L uder Captain Sheehan First Lieutenant Baxter and Second Lieutenant Mapes Colonel Barber Major Emmett and Quartermaster Wnthrop were also onboard on-board Colonel Barber being in command com-mand The second section was under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Stack pOle and consiSted of companies A under un-der Captain Palmer First Lieutenant Mather and Second Lieutenant McMil Ian B Captain Manson First Lieutenant Lieuten-ant Staats and Second Leuitena t Burton Bur-ton D Captain tracie First Lieutenant I Lieuten-ant Theelock Second Lieutenant Smith There was also Lieutenant Strevell regImental adjutant and Assistant As-sistant Surgeon Robinson on board The men aU seemed in good health ahd spirits though there were some of them who still looked pale and showed the signs of sickness At Honolulu they were encamped on the slopes of Diamond Dia-mond Head a bed of lava on the side I of a volcano The camp was about six miles from Honolulu and was a very poor one Xherewas also a regiment of engineers canped there The duties while there were light as it was found almost impossible to keep the men In good health Sickness was very great owing to the heat and gen eral unhealthiness of the country I While the regiment was stationed there seventeen of their number died and were bUried near Hotioluiu The bngl nears started to build quarters for them but work had to be discontinued 011 account ac-count of sickness As the health of the troops did not improve the New York regiment was ordered back to San Francisco and was stationed at the PresIdio The battalion that went through yesterday terda was composed mostly of the national na-tional guard of Albany and were well up in tactics They were armed with the old Springfield rifles and some of them still wore mllltia overcoats During Dur-ing their short stop in the city the oill eers and men wept up town a1d visited the tcmple tabernacle and other sights They expressefl themselves as greatly pleased with Salt Lake I A couple of hundred people gathered I at the Rio Grande Western depot before be-fore the train left and witnessed the departure of the troops here were I the usual number otgirls at the depot who gather around hen soldiers pass through The small boys Were also i1 evidence and stood in admiring groups watching the soldiers and talking about them The troops are to go direct to Albany where they will receive further orders None knew what was tQ be done with them all being ontent to know that they were going home I |
