long time Ume ago for forthe m getting on to SO I years ears of age uTo To begin at the bottom my m husband a nd I sailed from Ireland the day after we ve were married Wed heard fine ne tales of f o America and W we e came over to make JO JOn Ur fortunes We had but a a few pen n ies when we ot h n of clothes and und the few cooking things wed used on the voyage Id picked up Ul two empty bottles that some of the other passengers p engers had thrown away avay We have bottles to throw I away aa in the old of country so it came kind natural to me not to want to see them wasted wast The Empty Bottle DottIe Idea My husband got a job as aa a mason and I got a place as second cond cook in a restaurant It made me open my eyes the I kitchen way they threw things away in hi that Empty bottles were hauled away aay in cart loads along with of the the rest I picking refuse until by toy and by I got sot to them then out and taking them thorn home nights j I was only at that place six months but dUring that time tune I saved saed up something like beautiful bottles Then as my husbands work was steady and the pay good I came home bome to keep house for him bim and had time to think of or my bottes It seemed emed such a a shame to throw them away yet I see where there what was to be done In a country everybody got rid of them as soon as they were empty After awhile I decided to try to sell them to the places from which they were originally bought Many were wine bottles I so went to p a wine merchant and an told him of my lot He looked at me for awhile then he examined my bottle and said if it they were all as clean as that he would buy the lot but hed rather I brought him corks to sell as corks were wore harder to get than bottles I delivered to him all aU the wine bat bot ties I had saved then went around to co the restaurant to ta see my old oid friend the cook He agreed to save as many corks and bottles as possible provided I would take them thorn off every even ever day So I used to go every morning and bring away baskets full I washed the bottles and boiled the corks and once a week delivered them to the wine merchant Then I made my trip to the savings bank where I stored away my earnings Enlarging the Business As time passed I became more am and went about to other res and to other merchants in that way was wa increasing my m business I hired a boy to fetch and carry for me and between times when attending to my children or busy about the house I cleaned the bottles and corks carks This went on until I had saved ui Ut several hundred dollars The day that my youngest girl was three weeks old they brought my husband home dead A scaffolding had given way Those were dark times for me pie but I had my children to look 1001 after All little fellows just big enough to hold on to my m skirts They might D have hae taken the spirit out of some sonic women but they gave gaYe me heart to work and I up my mind to buy and sell nil all the empty bottles in this town And Ill tell teU you my m dear I very nearly did it I bought a horse and wagon and with my eldest son I visited every restaurant in the city and took away their bottles and corks Some of them then charged us but the majority were only too glad to have h ve them taken off Then I not only sold to wine mer men merchants chants but to every eyer dealer where bot ties were used Druggists were good customers when we could suit them in sizes and many were willing to send for the bottles instead of having me rue cart them Did Dick Di I only have hae one horse Bless you no I had bad six sis when alas the beer and other bottling companies realizing the value alue of empty bottles put an end to my business by offering to buy their own battles bottles back again But it was I Iwho Iwho Iwho who taught them to do it Ive always said it if I begun to save and sell empty bottles boWes that the street cleaners of New York would have haye twice as much work to do doIt doIt doit It harder work than any other business When the bottles were brought in they had to be cleaned and turned to drain then sorted as to size color and shape Later they were I packed and delivered Having been freshly emptied the cleaning was not difficult seldom needing anything be beyond beyond I yond ond hot hm soap and water My children soon learned to help and after a few years I turned the management of the horses and drivers over ovel to my oldest son That is the way he got his busi bus business ness When I gave up the business Id about educated all my children and was paying taxes on worth of real estate Since then New York property has gone up pretty high and now people L tell me my two tenement houses are worth near about They give I me a pretty fair living and a nice sum to lay by for my grandchildren Im real sorry the brewers have broke up the trade for empty bottles buttles was a good business for a woman who had a family of smart children to help iter iier LAFAYETTE |
