Show AJIUSE3IENTS THE WOLVES OF NEW YORK The Wolves of New York attracted into the theatre last night an audience of fair propDrtion I the times and weather be considered it was a splendid house Certainly it was topheavy the very name would fill the gallery The shouts of applause that came down from the top shelf showed how well the play was appreciated ap-preciated there The enthusiasm below wa not marked The play was indifferent I should be judged according to the class of plays to which it belongs the melodrama melo-drama While filled with the exciting ex-citing scenes the great climaxes the daring feats of the hero rescuing the heroine the mechanical Effects belonging to this class of the drama the Wolves of New York lacked what is necessary to the success of a play of this sort a clear welltold story There was too much in the story The blind girl was stolen and rescued a la Two Orphans Did it stop there No it commenced all over again and she was stolen and rescued res-cued again I the playwrIght could cutout cut-out one of these and make it clear why she was stolen at all the play would be more satisfactory The company that presented the play was well up to the standard required by melodrama Leonard Grover jr was well received by his old friends Hfe played the part of the hero and earring a tendency to talk too fast made a melodramatic melo-dramatic hero far above the average The setting of the play was exceedingly good The drop scenes were artistic while a number of the sets were very fine The Oil Yardon East river was one of the best mechanical effects ever seen on the stage of the theatre The barrel tramway tram-way the oil tanks the explosion the rescue were quite thrilling One feature was entirely new and that was the steroptican views between the acts which carried the story from one act to another The steroptican wasnt in fine fine working order and the orchestra would turn its lamps so this part was marred some The idea is entirely novel and was well appreciated last night The engagement closes with tonights performance < |
