Show LINSE AND SHEFFIELD The Slayers of Joe Leonard Released Yesterday The Men Acquitted by the Court Martial An Order Received from General Gen-eral McCook I At last after yards of red tape have been unwound and innumerable mem I bers of the military have taxed their brains and strength in the trial of the men and correspondence in the case a decision has been arrived at regarding the case of Sergeant Linse and Private Sheffield for the killing of citizen Joe Leonard The mass of correspondence that has accumulated in the office of the adjutant is appalling to the ordinary mortal There are letters innumerable between Colonel Blunt and the war department and Colonel Blunt and the authorities The heaviest documents on tile however contain the record of tho court martial that was held here a few weeks ago The court would not let out the decision at the time i was made as the mouths of the members were stopped by strong oaths which bound them to keep silent until the decision had been passed upon by the officers Yesterday Yes-terday morninc however an order was received at the fort from General McCook which approves the decision of the court Now it transpires that the court after hearing all tee evidence decided that either of the men could have done the killing by a ricochetting shot and that the killing was probably done by that kind t of a shot as all the evidence tends to prove that Leonard was sitting upright when killed and the ball took an upward 1 course through the body In the lace of these facts it was thought neither man could be proven guilty and therefore both were acquitted On receipt of this order the two men were released from confinement in the guard house and ordered to report for duty to their company commander Both have resumed their old places and are as free from restraint as any other soldiers notwithstanding not-withstanding the fact that Colonel Blunt I had been requested t hold the men until the civil authorities should take action in the case I When THE HERALD man called on Judge Judd in relation to the matter he found the district attorney and Assistant Howat in consultation Neither had < heard anything of the matter and were surprised on learning that the men had been released frm confinement Not having had time to consider the matter Mr Judd would not say what will be done but his decision may be expected in a few days |
