Show THE ENATK REPEAL BILL J It Is Reported by the Finance Committee I FULL TEXT OF THE BILL I Will Bo Called Dp on Next Tuesday Senator Yoorhecs Will at That Time Do liver a Speech on the Financial Question When a Vote Will Bo Taken WASHINGTON Aug 18The votes by which the Senate commItte on finance repeal re-peal bill was reported are Chairman Voor hees and Senators McPherson MorriJl Sherman Allison and Aldrich the last four Republicans The text of the bill is That so much of the act approved July 14 1890 entitled An act directing the purchase of silver bullion and the issue of treasury notes thereon and brother br-other purposes a directs the secretary of the treasury to purchase from lime to time silver bullion to the aggregate amount of 4500000 ounces or EO much thereof as may be offered in each month at the market price therefor not exceeding exceed-ing 1 for 31210 prce grains of pure silver and to issue in payment for buch purchases treasury notes of the United States be and the ¼ same is hereby repealed and it i hereby A declarea to be the policy of the United r States to continue the usa of both gold and silver as standard money and to coin both gold and silver into money of equal intrinsic and exchangeable value such equality to be secured through international in-ternational agreement or by such safeguards safe-guards of legislation as will insure the maintenance ol rarity in the value of coins of the two metals and an equal power of every dollar at all times in the markets and m payment of debts And it is hereby further declared that the efforts ef-forts of the government should be steadily stead-ily directed to the establishment of such safe system of bimetallism as will maintain main-tain at all times the equal powers of every dollar coined or issued by the United States in the markets and in payment of debts Senator Voorhees will not a he had p originally intended ask the Senate to fix a day for the vote on the bill He said this morning that he did not think a vote would be had on it for some timeas there appears to be a disposition on the part of the Senators to debate the measure for an indefinite time He will call it up next Tuesday at which time he will make a speech on the financial question generally gen-erally There has been some quiet talk among tha antislider men of tho committee as to the chances of a vote and final action on the bill and it is ascertained that while they feel pretty certain the bill can pass the House they appear by no means sanguine of the Senate There seems Imngine a feeling that the bill of Mr Vest establishing free coinage at a I ratio of 20 to 1 may possibly be 4 successful In that event even they look for the final triumph of the administration measures The two bills would then go o conference and in that stage at proceeding the Senate could without sacrificing its dignity which it BO zealously guards recede from its position posi-tion and adopt the bill of the House It i is believed that the members favorable to free coinage having by that time put themselves on record would be willing to vote to recede and straight repeal would go to the prasident for his signature |
