the < Amusement hall Mr Evans spoke will f f his customary earnestness proving to bis audience that he believed in the propriety and permanence of the present political movement and in the principles of tni great constitutional party He exposed the fallacies and falsehoods uttered in the same ball on the previous evening by Republican Re-publican speakers and fully convinced nil bearers that they had then been addressee as or by simpletons or by wilful falsifiers Mr Rholes aroused the ardor in hi bearers which he always displays in himself him-self He told them of the glorious Democratic Demo-cratic results from small beginnings in the eastern states Earnest honest work wai bis exhortation and Democratic success his prediction He reviewed the principles end the record of the Democratic party anc compared them with those of the other His address was able and effective and the seeds sown by him will yield a rich harvest in August if the people of the Fourth ward do but half their duty Mr Rhodes will probably give another N address in the same hall Thursday evening July 2 4 Messrs Allison and Cannon are too young to remember the events of the sixties but Major Breeden and Colonel Miller are not and the latter should instruct in-struct their youthful colaborers that the civil war was nearly concluded and the spoils were in sight before it was discovered dis-covered that the union army was composed exclusively of Republicans They should tell the boys the politics of McClellan Hancock Han-cock Butler and Rosecrans thatlongafter Ft Donelson was captured the hero of that fight was a Democrat that Kentucky and Missouri sent as many of their respective residents to the union army as any states in the union in proportion to population and that hundreds of thousands of the boys in blue were Democrats A little historical histori-cal education might benefit these boys and nowhere could they get better instruction than tho major and the colonel could give them for there are united military powers great political experience a high order of education and forensic powers far above rivah in this territory There is a young man doing oratorical job work for the Republican management in Veber county who should be suppressed If his fame as a constitutional lawyer and his uterances should escape across the mountains and reach the ears of M irons 4 tan at Washington the Nation with a big 1C might become involved in serious difficulties diffi-culties He has discoverad that President Tefferson whom he previously elected to the Kentucky legislature in making the Louisiana purchase acted without constitutional consti-tutional authority It is true that was nearly a century ago but time does not run against a sovereign power and France might assert her rights for she is no longer troubled with considerations of what England Eng-land might or could do which actuated the first Napoleon to think better of Yankee gold than of Mississippi bottom lands This I is probably only another Republican trick to obtain power and to takeirom the Democratic Dem-ocratic phalanx tho states in tbe Louisiana purchase and Florida Alaska can bo spared if the other result be attained Harriott Meeting A good Democratic meeting was held at the Marriott schoolhouse Thursday oven i jug and a strong club was organized t fr Messrs Joseph Peery W P L Peyton and A J Weber made short speeches and held the closest attention of the large audience audi-ence present Pointers The Democratic party is not in favor of free trade but it believes that taxes should be levied on tho luxuries of life as much aa possible and that the taxgatherers hand should fall most lightly on the shoulders of the poor Taxpayers can derive one consolation from thuMcKinloy tariff bill and that Is dandelion root is not taxed It is interesting to know that the colored people peo-ple outnumber the whites in only three southern south-ern states and in one of those only by a mere l hoalfn scratch Thus it will be seen that the dream of the black voters controlling the south through the ballot box can scarcely be realized even by the most Igorous of force bills At the same time the ft that they are clearly in the majority ma-jority should dispose of the argument of some southern leaders that bulldozing necessaryto maintain white supremacy and preserve order Pittelvrn Uitjiatcfi It might be interesting reading if the sentiments of southern Republicans could be gathered For instance this from a former Ohioan appointed by President Hayes to o 111 co Alabama aud still a resident of I that state uttered three days after the ClevelandHarrison election Senator Sherman wanted me to organize among the colored Republicans and capture the delegation dele-gation for uim The Senator has been a good friend to me and I am and always will bea Republican but I wrote him 1 could not dolt The fact is no white man la the south can affiliate with the negro f t politically or otherwise n That year the iJ colored delegates from Alabama were openly accused of having sold their votes and they unhesitatingly replied that they could not travel for nothing I The Races Yesterdays
