Show EVANSTON EVENTS Tidings from One of the Prettiest Towns the Inter mountain Boston One of the prettiest towns in tho intermountain inter-mountain region is Evanston situated among the foothills of the Uintab mountains moun-tains and on Bear river The population of the town is about two thousand though it has a large tributary population The business is mercantile mining and stock raising Many of the firms in and about Evanston have grown wealthy Almost within the limits of the town can be found immense deposits of coal and among the neighboring hills is grazing for extensive stock industries The distance from Salt Lake is about a hundred mile The altitude alti-tude is 6700 feet above tho sea level this being but little higher than Cheyenne and lower than Laramie It would surprise some of the eastern people to come west and visit some of tile homes that these peoplelike conies have built The railroads in the transMissouri country have been of much advantage to the home maker in western Wyoming On the hill there is residence of Thomas Blythe which cost near 20000 and still beyond is the home of George Chapman of the Neponset Cat tle company nicely built and heated by steam and lighted by electricity These homes are very different from the adobe homes of purtionsof Kansas and Nebraska The climate here is such that a warm house and a warm stove are very necessary Cold and long winters hold away and the Bottlers argue that the cold winds aid driving storms give them strength of body fend vigor of aUld The place is excellently watered and baa a system of waterworks that gives present satisfaction Tho water tax islow and as tha town grOWs the works can be extended The rainfall is considerable but not auf Icient for agricultural purposes The country coun-try iil a network of canals and the r acbea In the Bear River valley are in good e B4iuogoad produce a vest deal of liytimotby and alfalfa being the favorite Hroduct Much of the land im the county is taken up but there U much yet to be ° v + w claimed The county extends from the Utah line on the south to the Yellowstone National park on the north and it abounds in beautiful valleys and grass covered and coalstored hills The local stores keep a good lino of goods and the most fastidious taste can bd suited The cost of living is not high for this altitude alti-tude Necessaries can be had at a reasonable reason-able cost lit Good school and church advantages can be had here The taxes arc high as must be expected in thinly populated districts It is the purpose however of the property owners and voters to reduce the taxation to a minimum The county is well organized organ-ized and manned and the town has a mayor I C Wmslow and a board of councilman council-man The county has no grand jury system sys-tem and it has not yet been definitely settled who makes the indictments of an offender There are two papers here one a weekly and the other a semiweekly the latter being Democratic and edited by Jules Ludin The county buildings are good and substantial The state insane asylum Dr Hocker superintendent is located here and is an imposing structure with all I modern appliances The hotel accommodations accommoda-tions are firstclass The Pacific Hotel I Marx aud the Rocky Mountain are all good I places to stop and get refreshed There arc too a number of good private boarding 1 board-ing houses about the town Wyoming can I feel proud of the bustling Uttlo city at the j base of the UinUs I I The local authorities aro mending tho t breech in the roundhouse made by the obstreperous I ob-streperous engine this week Tno stonemasons I stone-masons will have it up very soon The damage done to the engine was something i liKe iOi She will be thoroughly overhauled over-hauled beret bere-t The derrick car belonging to the U P company put in the now turu table at tho local roundhouse It is much stronger than I i tho one just removed I Asocial dance at Mrs Petersons boarding i board-ing house on Main street was much enjoyed en-joyed by those present Mrs Donald McAlister of Almy is spending spend-ing the summer at Bear Lake Utah At the recent conference of the Wyom inc mission at Douglas Rev William Henley was appointed to the church at Evanston and Rev William Ramsey was retained as preacher In charge of the Methodist Meth-odist mission at Almy I The meadows down Bear river are doing I nicely The rainfall has oecn so abundant I I in this county during the spring and summer sum-mer that irrigation has hardly been necessary neces-sary It is predicted that the hay harvest I this year will be greater even than that ofi last year I The state board of cnaritics is here this i week on business in connection with the I insane asylum All the public state buildings II build-ings are under its supervision The board is made up of the governor and his subordinate subordi-nate staff officers MAIIC EVANSTOA Wyo June 23 ISJL |
