Show LUNCHED BY STJTEO I Our City Officials Are Some Pumpkins Pump-kins on the Coast They took at the Seals and Listen to Mr Sutros Speech on the Mormon Question The progress made by the city council in the way of investigating fireproofing methods Is set forth by the San Francisco Call of Sunday Seven supervisors and several other San Francisco officers and the Salt Lake city officials were the guests of Adolph Sutro yesterday In all there were about thirty in the party and they were driven from the Palace hotel to the Cliff House in I III carryalls drawn oy fourinhands S The weather was pleasant and everyone every-one enjoyed the trip immensely After viewing the cliffs the rocks and the seals Mr Sutro showed his guests through his big bathing establishment and aquarium which are nearing completion C Then there was a stroll through the beautiful grounds of Sutro Heights after which luncheon was served at the private residence of the philanthropist When all the good things had been partaken of speeches and toasts were declared in order I or-der I President Loofbourow started the ball rolling by thanking Mr Sutro for the reception re-ception and concluded by proposing that the guests drink to the health of their host I hostMr Sutro was equal to the occasion Gentlemen said he it gives me HI special pleasure to welcome at this table not only our newly elected city officials but also the lately elected officials of the city of Salt Lake who are today our guests Your visit to San Francisco marks a period in history Almost fifty years ago the Mormons settled at Salt Lake and daring all that time have had full sway in Utah Territory Many and persistent have been the efforts in Con I gess to have the United States govern I i ment send troops to Utah to force the I Mormons into subjection to the laws of j I the United States and just as persistent have for many yeaas been the efforts of the Gentiles to obtain control of the government gov-ernment of Salt Lake City S All the efforts signally failed until at last in the late election the Gentiles gained a victory over the Mormons and j as a result we are enabled to welcome you in San Francisco where you have come to learn something of the manner of how a city government should be conducted I I con-ducted ductedPossibly we may have yet to learn something ourselves for surely we all I know that our city government heretofore hereto-fore was hardly one to take pattern from i But I must congratulate all the citizens of San Francisco upon the great reform in I the character of the gentlemen who have lately taken office and who have started in a vigorous and commendable manner to improve our city affairs Now to return to our visitors I recollect well the beautifnl city of Salt Lake which I saw first before the Union Pacific railroad was completed I recollect recol-lect well the impression made on me by its beautiful and romantic situation under un-der the very shadows of the towering satch mountains its broad cleanly I streets with clear limpid flowing water on both sides thereof its onestor ied neat but plainly constructed houses and its simpleminded industrious and at the same time fanatical and superstitious super-stitious inhabitants Their fanaticism was of a religious character under which they no doubt committed many wrongs But after all most religions are more or less based upon superstition and polygamously inclined people may be found among some of the most civilized nations Let us be charitable therefore andI am confident our ho n ored guests will deal leniently with the Mormons over whom they have now finally gained the upper hand It was probably a fortunate circumstance circum-stance that the United States never used force for it would have led to bloodshed and made martyrs out of the Mormons 1 S I often remarked while in Washington Washing-ton as long as twentyfive years ago when heated debates were being had in both houses of Congress that this Mormon Mor-mon question would solve itself in the course of time and lo and behold I our guests today bear living evidence of the solution Gentlemen permit me to express the hope that Utah may soon form an additional addi-tional and brilliant star in the union of states and welcoming you once more on this spot in full view of the Pacific ocean I propose the health of the representatives Df progress our honored guests When the applause had subsided Supervisor Super-visor Kennedy told how the name of Adolph Sutro would go down to posterity in connection with the Sutro tunnel and Sutro Heights south in the evening or tomorrow |
