Fast CINCINNATI OM May 18The three or four hundred delegates in attendance upon the National Union conference which begins be-gins in this city tomorrow were rein forced this morning by the arrival of asp a-sp cial train bearing ten carloads of delegates dele-gates from western states There is a division of sentiment on the third party question but the drift seems to be favorable to such action as will insure the nomination of a national ticket in 1892 This conference will not undertake to make any nomination but an effort will be made to get things in such shape that it will be an easy matter to take action in that regard next year I is denied the south is so strongly opposed to a third party as has been represented It has not I been determined what method the con ference will adopt to get its views before the people There is some talk of propar ing an address in which the final principles of those attending the conference on finance transportation labor and land will be fully set forth Again it is urged the proper way would be to adopt a platform and take such action as will settle on the affirmative the question of cutting adrift from the old parties and nominating candi dates for the presidency and vicepresi dency in 1892 This afternoon was devoted to a conference confer-ence of various state delegations The Iowa delegation among other things adopted a resolution urging the nomination of a full independent ticket next June There was rather a turbulent meeting of the delegation from Kansas due largely to the fact that it is much stronger in point of numbers than any other state there being nearly eight hundred persons here rartt ncart tinrr cmira rtrtrroni otinno T7 thA Farmers alliance Citizens ntnml alliance Peo pIes party Knights of Labor National In ustrial motion that each organization be allowed to select two persons to act as committee men from Kansas in the general conference provoked a lively discussion but finally prevailed Then L there was trouble over the selection of the i elevation Mr Schnelault in common with three men were undertaKing to name the persons who should be selected by each I rganization A motion to allow each organization to appoint its members was adopted The Farmers alliance then went into secret session The National Reform Press association 1 held two meetings today There is much peculation as to the platform Objection to the Ocala declaration is strong in some quarters and there is a disposition to fol low the St Louis platform The eastern men are active in regard to the position to be taken on silver and I ho eighthour plank A conference was held today with leading delegates from the west and south ahd the plans of the east wore fully made known and were re ceivod with favor The eastern men want this plan adopted on the silver question That this conference favors the restoration of silver to the position it occupied before 873 viz on an equality with gold as a monetary standard of value I Also one providing for an extension of the eighthour princIple to apply to all firms and corpora ions employing labor in different tons diforent states of the union The eastern men announce their determination to make a strong effort to secure the incorporation of these planks in the platform With thoso delegates here the opinion has been expressed frequently that as goes Kansas so will go the convention and much stress is laid on the fact that Kansas after a lengthy and lively caucus decided late tonight to support thc organ zation of a third party The arrival of tho allinois Iowa Nebraska and other northern north-ern delegates tomorrow however may change the popular expression in the caucus cau-cus Congressman Simpson Glover en deavored to persuade Kansas it would be better to adopt a platform containing the essential octrlnes appoint a committee on propoganda and determine by next whether a third party would stick spring These suggestions however were howled down At a general caucus this afternoon there were many lively bouts by President Washburn of the Northerstern Industrial alliance who voices the ideas of the labor element of the cities created considerable furore by telling tho caucus plainly tho industrial element did not propose to be used as a cats paw to aid Democratic sue cess in the next election I a third party suc was to bo formed thesouth and southwest would have to come in as well as the northern north-ern delegates The industrial elements of the east west and northwest were neither willing nor desirous to draw votes out of Republican states while at the same time the pseudoalliance tme pseudoalance men of the south wore sticking to Democrtic alliance Other speakers laid stress on the fact that the eastern peoples movement dif fered from thatof the Grangers inasmuch as its organization was moulded after those of the old political parties and recognized neither secret ritual grips nor passwords All this flummery would have to be I abolished if the parties coalesced on a partes coaesced gen oral platform Senator Pfeffer of4 Kansas doubts whether it would bo wise for the independent independ-ent movement to go too far at present but yet thinks there will surely be a third party in 1S92 The third party feeling is undoubtedly growing and it is even said tonight that i a majority of the delegates decide against it the minority will with draw and declare in favor of it It is said an effort wil be made incorporate aplank in the platform pledging the new party if formed against supporting any man for the presidency or vicepresidency who has ever favored liquor licence laws |
