Show THE QUAKREL PROCEEDS While our local contemporaries are quarreling among themselves as to the causes of the late defeat while Republicans and Liberals are charging each other with playing falsely the Democrats are moving along peacefully and grandly making converts con-verts to the glorious principles taught by JEFFEHSOX and preparing to assume control con-trol of this mighty commonwealth and govern it in the interest of all the people Democrats have nothing do with the bitter contention which troubles our friends the enemy The Democrats know that at the recant election they were I true as steeL Thoy know that they wore actuated by principle that they had good tickets in the field and that they voted for their nominees They know also that they carried the territory by a majority greater than they bad counted upon and that the legislature is overwhelmingly theirs the opposition being so insignificant as to cut no figure in that body Knowing all this they can look upon the wrangling of the defeated with complacency and can smile over the recriminating charges which are bandied back and forth between the Republicans who assert that they are not Liberals and the Republicans who boast l that they are Liberals first and lie jublicans afterward The Democrats we say are preparing to take charge of this splendid commonwealth and govern it in a way which will recognize the rights of the individual according to those principles prin-ciples which the immortal JEFFERSOX advocated vocated and Insisted with such good pur pose should oe lorover a part 01 our insti I tutions after that central idea so clearly stated by him when ho wrote Our legis lators aro not sufficiently apprised of the rIghtful limits of their power that their true office is to declare and enforce only our national rights and duties and to take none of them from us xo man has a natural right to commit aggression oa the equal rights of another and this is all from which the law ought to restrain him Every man is under the natural duty of contributing to the necea allies of society and this is all the laws should enforce on him and no man having the natural right to be the judge between himself and another it is his duty to submit sub-mit to the umpirage of an Impartial third When the laws havedeclared and enforced all this they have fulfilled their functions and the idea i is quite unfounded that on entering tering into society we give up any natural ignt It is this creed which tho Democrats from one end of Utah to the other are studying and preparing to put into prac tice so soon as selfgovernment shall be conceded to them They are daily gaining I occasions to their ranks daily bringing I under the banner men who will hereafter I be found among those working for the cause of uumaa liberty for simple UDOII I i I I tentatious government for honesty and economy in the administration for the enforcement I en-forcement of necessary duties upon the individual and for the protection of the individual in those natural rights which Democracy says belong to man inherently I |
