Show PURGE THE LIST I I It Is observed that Colonel SELLS the secretary of the territory has been appointed ap-pointed chief registration officer for this I city THE HEUALD holds Colonel SELLS in higher esteem than anybody has held some of his predecessors and because of our opinion of him we look for an Improvement on the system which has prevailed in tbo past and which has made the registration scandalous if cot criminal It is known that the list is deplorably faulty It looks I as if it had been carefully and cunningly arranged with the view to the perpetration of frauds at the polls The names of hundreds of dead men appear in the list proving that little attention ha been paid to the work of revision Durin the late campaign neither the letter carriers nor private canvassers were able to fin some two thousand or more citizens whose names were listed and in some instances their residence addresses given Wit such a list it is practically impossible to have a fair election Fraud is easy of commission com-mission It is not difficult for a dishonest political manager to find scoundrelswilling for a consideration to personate at tho polls dead and absent men It has been openl charged that there has been much of this personation in the past men being brought from tho mining camps and the railway stations to vote in the names that were given them Whether or not theso charges were true the crime charged could be easily committed with such faulty registration regis-tration lists I If Colonel SELLS desires an honest election elec-tion next February he can domore to bring it about than any other man He can purge the registration list and make that list represent only live bona fide voters this is what he should do and if he will do it tho charge of fraud will not be made next winter No honest party can present an objection to such purging of the list Only 1 those who are capable of fraud and who hope to profit by crooked practices will find fault with an honest live registration registra-tion list which carries only the names of lawful voters THE HERALD asks Colonel SELLS to perform per-form his duty not as a partisan but as an honest official who wants to see a fair election elec-tion We ask him to pursue such a course as will remove the scandal which has attended at-tended all of our recent elections and will make it probable that the votes cast will represent the lawful voters of the city |
