Show TH DUELING CODE It i Resorted to by Members of the New York Yacht Club A Frenchman Resents Slurring Remark About a Belation Challenge The 3Ien Fight With Cutlasses Jen Wih Cutases 1 Special to THE HERALD Examiner Dispatch NEW YORK Aug nA press correspondent corres-pondent at Vineyard Haven Massachusetts Massachu-setts sends the following I reports here tonight are true the dueling code has been resorted to by members of the greatest great-est yacht club in tho countrythe New York whosa fleet of vessels now lies at anchor in this harbor When the squadron came toanhor Monday evening the first scene in a very tragic episode was enacted On one of the yacuts merry party sat at dinnerv Champagne flowed freely and conversation was unrestrained Amid the wine one of the gentlemen present made slurring remarks it is reported about a ady A cousin of hers a French gentleman gentle-man was present His relationship was not known to the libeler Without a instants in-stants hesitation he knocked his glib tongued fellow guest on to the deck The man struck is prominent in club and social life and is skilled as a swordsman pistol shot and an athlete Ho challenged the Frenchman to settle tho dispute according to the code and the challenge was accepted ac-cepted seconds were chosen and it was agreed to go ashore early Tuesday morning morn-ing and settle the matter by a duel with swords which were on the yacht Both men are experienced swordsmen and as cutlasses were tho only weapons at hand they decided to use them Next morning they put ashore at Glen Cove accompanied by their seconds The men were evenly matched After a short conflict the Frenchman threw open his guard and was terribly injured by his opponent who cut into his right shoulder deeply and made along a-long jagged wound which extended down his chest The Frenchman fainted several times while he was being carried to the boat for conveyance to the yacht Doctors were summoned from New York and his wounds were dressod and to prevent discovery dis-covery of the occurrence he was kept aboard the yacht two doctors staying with him him The lady in the case is Mme Marie Gerard de Burdeau She has won not a little distinction aboard as a vocalist She is a southern woman of French extraction tracton who married a Frenchman of some prominence promin-ence about two years ago She i well known in society in Paris as a countess She returned to this country about six months ago and is now stopping at Nar ragansett pier This is tha second duel in which the Countess de Burdeau has been the cause of a personal meeting i |
