Show HARRISONS PLEASANT DUTY The editor of the New York World was quick to catch on to the pleasant duty to which President HARRISOX referred in his little speech down at Liberty park a week ago today when he boasted of hav ing signed more territorial admission bills than any other President Last Monday the I i World editorially refers to that boast as i follows It has been a pleasant duty to welcome the I Dakotas Washington Montana Idaho and Wyoming into the great sisterhood of states This is what Mr HAHHISON said on Saturday to I the people of Salt Lake city It required a good deal of temerity to say it at all It required a good deal more to say it in the presence of the people of Utah who arc re fused statehood on partisan grounds although they outnumber Idaho and Wyoming together The President glorified and boasted of a great political crime perhaps the greatest outrage I ever perpetrated upon the federal union a crime by wblch coupled with tho Jlfnnt1nn steal the Republican party obtained U I y twelve I Senatorships and six rotten boroughs with a population aggregating 1138166 have a power j in the Senate equal to that of the six great I states of Now York Pennsylvania stO Illinois i I Ohio Missouri and Massachusetts with a popu L ation or 33672601 All these six neW states together do not contain much more than hair the population of Massachusetts but their 1138166 people have twelye Senators while the 2238S people of Massachusettsor the 51197853 of New York have only two It is the commis sion or such a public crime that the Presdent o the United States regards od as a pleasant duty The coming generations however unless the course of nature and civilization shall be reversed and the people become do I graded will not agree with President HAnK SON that it is a pleasant duty to rob the states or their just Influence and to defeat the popular will by the creation or rotten boroughs On the contrary they will recognize the admis sion of these states as an infamous outrage that will always bo a blot on the admlnlstrv ion tionOur Our New York contemporary might have gone on and shown how rank was the crime of admitting Idaho and I Wyoming while denying admission to Utah and New Mexico The first two were made Repub I lican l by direct criminality and outrageous jugglery j such as have never before disgraced dis-graced American commonwealths j and having been legislated into political har mony with Mr HAEIIISONS party they were taken into the union though one of them has litttle more population than a single county in Utah and both combined have fewer people than this territory Not one of the six states last taken into the union it so well prepared for carrying on a state government as this territory has been every day for the past ten years j but Utah must be kept out because of tho apprehen sion that her people wore not Rupublicans and might send to Congress two Senators and one Representative who would offset by their votes the strength gained by the creation of a rotten borough So also with New Mexico an honest and progressive territory which went to Wash ington with a just and earnest appeal for emancipation Her people however had to admit that they were Democrats that they believed in the principles and doo trines upon which the republic is founded j with this honest and manly confession their fate was sealed and Mr HARBISONS party said they could not be admitted to the union but must remain serfs to an autocratic authority which never permitted permit-ted right or justice to stand in the way of the retention of political power That pleasant duty of which President HARRIS OX boasted was interpreted and accepted by his Liberty park listeners as an insult and they will not soon forgot it To boast of making states of Wyoming and Idaho and denying statehood to Utah was certainly not a happy hit before a Utah audience I |
