Show CHARLES H SP URGE 0 The Noted Pastor and Editor His Career There have Been About Forty Chapels Erected In London by His Followers His Ynergy and Activity Boundless For THE SUNDAY HERALD Copyrighted Charles Haddon Spurgeon was born in Kelvedon Essex England June 19 1S34 In the whole history of the nonconformist movement in that country there is no man who has occupied a more prominent position posi-tion He came from a family of clergymen clergy-men hIs father and grandfather both being preachers of the Independent denomination When sixteen years old he became teacher in a school at Newmarket which town by the way is in two counties the north side in Suffolk and the south side in Cambridge i L M2 t t C l 4 shire Afterwards he was attached to a I school in Cambridge While there he joined join-ed an association of lay preachers and at the early age of eighteen he was pastor of a I Baptist congregation at Waterbeacb His preaching attracted attention and a year later he received a call to the New Park Street Baptist chapel in Southwark London Lon-don So great were the crowds who flocked to hear him that the congregation were obliged to find larger accommodationfirst in Exeter boll and afterwards in the Surrey Sur-rey music hall In Newington Butts al I chapel was erected for his congregation capable of seating 6000 Mr Spurgeon has a personal magnetism in preaching that is marvellous Each hearer is impressed with the idea that he alone is addressed which accounts for his extraordinary popularity popu-larity He has received upwards of 120000 persons into his church and about forty chapels have been erected in London by his followers the ministers of which have graduated from a college founded by himself him-self His energy and activity are boundless bound-less and some twenty volumes of his ser mqns have been published Among his works are Gems a volume containing brilliant passages from his discourses The Saint and His Savior John Ploughmans Talk or Plain Advice for Plain People Feathers for Arrows Lectures tomyStudents He is also the editor of a journal the Sword and Truing Mr Spurgoon has a fine expressive countenance coun-tenance which is full of earnestness His sermons are listened to attentively by I members of all religious denominations t o 11 |
