Show A Report on Protection in England LONDON July ISThe Cobden club at a meeting last night adopted a report which declared I i had not been suggested by some home protectionist it was not likely that any colonist would have been so unreasonable a to propose we should while admitting colonial goods free of duty tax similar commodities imported from foreign for-eign countries While the president of the board of trade in the government of Lord Salisbury delivers an unanswerable refutation refu-tation of the argument that it is a case for fiscal federation as prescribed by the United Trade league our free trade system does not appear to be greatly endangered but we must be on our guard a these proposals are now strongly urged by the colonies a well a by the league Protectionism in protectionist countries has not attained the height at which it stood at tho time of Cobden The interests of employers and land owners are powerful power-ful and the government finds it comparatively tively easy to raise enormous revenues by collision with interests which profit by protection The report also edict compositors and kindred trades vi not suffer on account of the American copyright act |
