Show VOKK OF THE GRAND JURY The Fort Douglass Tragedy Investigated and Indictments Returned The grand jury considered yesterday the case of Sergeant Linse and Private Sheffield charged with the shooting and I killing of Joe Leonard at Fort Douglas I Assistant District Attorneys Howat and I Richards were on hand to represent the I prosecution and a number of soldiers rom the fort were subncenaed as witnesses nesses It will be remembered that Joe Leonard an exsoldier went out to the fort to re i new old acquaintances and may have taken a drink or two and when leaving for the city in his buggy drove through the grounds at a faster pace than the regulations of the fort permit When called to halt by Sentry Linse he did not obey and was fired on bY both Linse and I a private soldier named Sheffield with the result that he was so seriously wounded I that he died a day or twofer two-fer the shooting Linse and Sheffield were tried by court martial under the rules prescribed by the army and exhon orated as having acted only in the strict line of duty The civil authorities took up the case and at their instance the matter mat-ter came before the grand jury and it is understood that an indictment for murder was found against both the accused OTHER INDICTMENTS Yesterday forenoon the grand jury reported re-ported to Judge Zaue that they had found two indictments under the United States I statutes and three under the territorial statutes I is understood that the indictments under the terri I tonal statutes are against Harry Hammond for the murder of Clyde Robertson against Charles Arnup for the involuntary manslaughter of a China man against Sergeant Linse and Private Sheffield for the murder of Joe Leonard The indictments under the United States statutes were against William Henry and Mrs Tullidge for adultery and 1 man I named Colton for a similar offense |
