| Show F A Smooth I Transaction c Walter P Martin ayounpman who came to Ogden a few months ago from Indiana has committed several forgeries recently of a serious character He was quite well known In Ogden and was snpposed to bo a young man of good repute Some time ago he borrowed a patent to a 160 acre tract of land belonging to David Philps a farmer living near Hooper for the avowed purpose of having it recorded After he bad done this he forged a deed from Mr Philps and wife to himself He then went to Caleb L McKee stating he wanted to borrow some money on tha land Mr McKee examined the title to tho property and feeling that the security was ample made a loan of S4Q0 to Martin Mr Philps1 son came to the city a few days ago to get the patent and discovered dis-covered that the property had been deeded to Martin He became suspicious of what had happened and told Mr McKee that the land he had accepted as security for the loan had been transferred from his fathers name through forgery In the meantime Martin had flown to other climes Marshal Mar-shal Metcalf and Mr McKee heard the man was in Salt Lake but upon going there it was ascertained that he had reported himself as leaving for Dallas Texas Martin forged the signatures of David Phelps and wife two witnesses and the notary public in making out the papers Last week he sent a draft to the First National Na-tional bank of this city for 400 and interest in-terest to pay the amount of the loan incurred in-curred from Mr McKee No trace of the man has been ascertained |
