| Show THE SUGAR PLANT Work is Being Pushed Ahead With Vigor THE COMPANYS BIG BEET FARM Thirty Teams and From Fifty to Seventyfive Men Will be Necessary to Cultivate Culti-vate It We are going ahead splendidly and could not ask for better results than those already achieved Thus replied Mr George Austin who is connected with the Utah Sugar company The main building is now up and I do not think there is the slightest doubt but the plant will be in full operation by the middle of Septemberthe time set for the crushing of the first beet It will be a gala day in Utah cpunty you may be sure when the whistle resounds and the wheels revolve re-volve for the first time II How are the grangers tackling the idea of beetraising in order that the factory may be supplied Very kindly indeed There must be at least a thousand acres already sown and the seed is being put in just as fast as the weatner will permit The company has also acquired another big piece of ground and will sow It In beets I have charge of this farm and I estimate that it will require from fifty to seventyfive men and at least thirty teams to properly cultivate cul-tivate it It will produce a big yield however how-ever Within what area can the farmers of I Utah raise beets and dispose of them to the sugar companyl It is all right so far as the Utah county people are concerned as the haul to market is inconsiderable but in distant localities it is different Will not the freights charged by the railroads eat up all the profits I think not In fact I am given to understand that a rate has been conceded by the railroad companies to all beet shippers ship-pers and that it Is such a rate as will enable en-able Utah grangers within one hundred miles of Lehi to raise beets and deliver them at the works with a good profit What price will bo paid 1 From 450 to 5 a ton according to the percentage of sugar in the beets It all depends de-pends upon that you know The capacity of the works is 350 tons per day and it is calculated that the wheels will be kept going for at least 120 days in each year Do you believe there is a good profit for the farmers in raising beets 1 I do indeed and I am certain that those who now entertain doubts in this regard will have them dispelled ore a year has rolled by I In a recent issue of an exchange appeared the following Much has been said by political economists econom-ists of the great benefit to be derived by the producer and manufacturer being located close together so that the profits to middle men would be avoided and a greater benefit would go where it rightfully belonged be-longed viz to the producer Nothing can be more practical in this line than the farmers farm-ers selling directly to the factory in beets the product of his farm or a part of it at at least This is exactly what the Utah Sugar factory means to tho farmers in its vicinity who grow beets for it The benefits to be derived from this new industry cannot be well ea imatod and are slow to be recognized Then can be no danger from overproduc tion for a continued and steady market is assured and little danger can be expected from even a partial failure of tho growing crop especially is this true in Utah No crop adapted to our country is capable of withstanding extreme dry weather as well as tho sugar beet this it is understood when the beets have been kept clean and well cultivated This industry is therefore deserving of the hearty encouragement of theUtah farmers farm-ers > especially Manufactories are needed iu this territory and will assist greatly to develop it by consuming a large part of its surplus product now necessary to ship auyiy The beet sugar industry is practically practi-cally adapted to Utah as the results of experiments ex-periments and analysis made in different parts of the territory have already demonstrated demon-strated and we can confidently expect to see Utah stand In the lead of beet sugar manufacturing within the next few years Our lands will advance in price as a matter of course and all other interests will receive a substantial stimulus never before dreamed of This is what our farmers have so long required and now that they have received it nothing noth-ing else can be expected from them than their hearty cooperation and support and this can best be given by demonstrating what can be done In producing a paying crop of beets with a good percent of sugar In them If the farmers really wanted to better their condition now is their time to act In a way to show their sincerity in the matter and that they appreciate the advantages ad-vantages given them by the erection of the Utah Sugar factory |
