Show AMUSEMENTS THE LITTLE TYCOOX Mr Willard Spensers exceedingly tiThe ful but exceedingly brainless opera The Little Tycoon went before a crowded house at the theatre last evening It was on its fifth or sixth presentation in Salt Lake and the immense gathering that greeted it is a strong testimonial of the way its popular and catchy airs bj vo caught on with the public The favorite airs Love Comes Like a Summer Sigh The Fascination nation chorus The American Eagle and the other wellknown selections went as well as ever The opera is in fact full of charming airs gorgeous scenery and handsome costumes but the general thinness thin-ness and silliness of the libretto and some of tho characters form a drag on the work that is almost fatal The most attractive member pt the company is Jennie Gold thwaite whose brunette archness was vastly taking with the audience The soprano so-prano Miss Evans has been seen hero before be-fore with Carleton Her voice is sweet but not particularly atrdngj and she cannot be called a perfect actress Mr Mande ville was a fairly good Knickerbocker but he was not up to Bob Graham the original in the part Mr Pacie has a sweet but very light tenor voice Mr Mealey was clever as before in his old part of the Valet and Mr OBrien in the exasperatingly inane part of the lord did probably as much as anyone else could have done with It The chorus was bright and merry The Tycoon Ty-coon goes again this afternoon and evening even-ing DR ARCHER DROPS IN Local musicians were greatly surp rised yesterday to see the famous organist Dr Fred Archer drop down on Salt Lake without a word of warning He is en route to Portland Ogn where he opens a new organ next week and having a day to spare it occurred to him he might as well spend it in Salt Lake In company with Profs Krouse and Daynes the doctor visited the tabernacle yesterday at U30 and twenty or thirty local music lovers who had been posted quietly dropped in and took seats in the body of the house Dr Archer was prevailed on to run his fingers over the keys and the hour and a half he remained seated at tho organ were surely among the most delightful ever experienced by his listeners He played a march by Meyer Deer which was like harmonious thunder every seat in the building shook as if an earthquake were raging under the building build-ing Mr Stephens who was present said he had never before heard the powers of tho organ so grandly brought out Beethovens sublime pastoral symphony Battistes affertory and the prayer from Zampa were all rendered in a manner that kept the auditors almost awestruck awe-struck Dr Archers execution is almost bewildering his pedal work is wonderfully brilliant and the play of his fingers as ho operates two key boards with one hand is simply phenomenal He viewed the taber naole with great admiration and made many suggestons to Mr Daynes regarding improvements im-provements and modern appliances necessary neces-sary for the organ the most pressing of which is a key board out in front of the instrument in-strument by the side of the conductor By pneumatic action the response from the organ is instantaneous and the performer if able to hear the effect of the sound he is producing > as the organ is now arranged that is an impossibility Dr Archer proceeded on his way to the coast last evening |
