Show JJRUTAUTY ALLEGED The Charge Made Against Sheriff Mc Queen and His Jailors Henry Cassidy a member of the gang of toughs who terrorized the people of Sandy last winter was released from the county jail yesterday morning and his first act was to make an affidavit charging Sheriff McQueen and the jailors with extreme ex-treme brutality He claims that the prisoners are given improper and insufficient in-sufficient food and that they are not allowed al-lowed sufficient exercise and charges several specific acts of brutality towards him alleging that he was put in the dungeon I dun-geon several times because he was riotous riot-ous that he was once handcuffed and his hands fastened to the top of an iron leer and beaten with broom handles by the Sheriff I that on another occasion Jailor Hill and Guard Albright turned the hose upon him while he was stoic and kept the water playing until ho fainted that on another occasion fvhen he had smashed eight panes of glass in his cell and made a noise by singing and shouting Deputy Sheriff OBrien and Jailor Hill tried to handcuff him and be resisted and OBrien hit him with a club rendering him unconscious after which the hose was again turned on him by OBrien Cassidy concludes his affidavit with a statement to the effect that when he was released Hill told him to get out of town or he would be arrested again while the heriff concluded to Rend him to Ogden He says he had concluded to lead an honest life in future and expects to leave this part of the country No one will deny that Cassidy and the rest of his gang were desperadoes and that they richly merited the terms of imprisonment im-prisonment to which they were sentenced for their criminal conduct at Sandy At the same time brutality towards prisoners prison-ers is inexcusable and there Should be some way of punishing those who are guilty of it Cassidys affidavit may or may not be true but the fact that he does not try to make himself an angel and admits that he was frequently guilty of misconduct is in his favor |
