Show i NELSO IIJ1AS1P ON U BOND I His Preliminary Examine I Held at Ogden I I TWO PRISONERS ESCAPE Each Had Been Sentenced by Judge Miner to Two Years in the Pen Mner lio One of them Captured But the Other Still at LargeAn Attempt Will be Blade to Borrow Money to Pay Interest on Ogden Bonds OGDEN Aug 25SpecialDeputy United States Marshal Budd of Helena Mont reached Ogdon this morning having hav-ing in his custody A H Nelson exman aging secretary of the Ogden Building and Loan association who is charged by the officers of that institution with having embezzled S13000 and this afternoon after-noon a preliminary examination was commenced before Commissioner Hulan iski but was not concluded and will be continued tomorrow morning Three witnesses were placed upon the stand but no damaging evidence was brought out the testimony being almost entirely confined to a discussion of the business methods of the association and none of it showed that there is really any defalcation defalca-tion The prosecution feel confident however of yet making out a strong case NelsQn was released on a 4COO bond with Judge A B Patton and 1 H Wheelwright Wheel-wright as his sureties To a HERALD man he denied all of the charges made against him and affirms his entire inno cence At the morning session of the district court a number of alleged criminals were arraigned upon indictments found against them for various crimes Among them were Charles F Martin and Ed Forrest men who burglarized the store of Kuhn k Bro They pleaded guilty to burglary and were each sentenced by Judge Miner to two years in the penitentiary peniten-tiary When court adjourned for the morning session Martin and Forrest were in company com-pany with ten others and were marched from jhe court room to the north entrance of the Utah Loan and Trust company building in which court quarters are located i lo-cated They had been handcuffed together to-gether but in some manner succeeded in unlocking the cufis and when the north entrance was reached Martin made a bold rush for liberty down Twentyfourth street He was followed by one of the three officers in charge and captured after a chase of half a block The other prisoners were at once bunched and upon looking around the officers found that Forrest was missing and such is the situation at a late hour tonight notwithstanding the fact that all day large number of United States city and countv officers have been searching the city and vicinity Forrest evidently took the matter coolly and walked quietly away during the excitement consequent upon the attempted escape of Martin This evening the handcuffs which held the two together during their stay in the courtroom were found under the seat occupied by Forrest and it is evident the men held their hands together for the purpose of deceiving officers The treasury of the board of education is depleted and the serious question which now confronts the board is where is the money with which to pay interest on the bonds coming due At 0 meeting tonight the board decided to i possible borrow 25000 for ninety days on the best terms obtainable |
