| Show THE BIG FAIR I A Slightly Decreased Attendance LONG LIST OF PRIZES Miss Lizzie Livingstone is Declared De-clared the Greatest Beauty I A SUCCESSFUL BALLOON ASCENT A Baby Show on the Programme To day Prospects of Continuing the Fair Over Saturday I The attendance at the fair yesterday was very large but not quite equal to that of I Wednesday The balloon ascension and parachute drop was the chief attraction of I the day and this time it was a perfect success I suc-cess retrieving as far as possibletho fail urn of Wednesday The directors of the I fair society had made arrangements with C H Smith and the Woodnll Bros noted I aeronauts to do the balloon act today in place of Professor Butler who made the unsuccessful attempt the day before The performers commenced filling the balloon with gas about half an hour before the I time set for the ascension They had all their arrangements well made and at 405 oclock just five minutes later than the I time appointed the word was given to lego J le-go and up she sailed in fine style very quickly attainin a 1 height of about four I thousand feet when young Woodall cut loose tho parachute and fell rapidly for a few hundred loot until tho I umbrella expanded and checked the force when he descended gracefully and slowly to the earth only a 1 few hun red yards on the southeastern side of the fair grounds and in less than fifteen minutes the young fellow was back in the main hall of the exposition building bowing his acknowledgements acknowl-edgements of tho applause rendered him by the assembled multitude The balloon itself soon emptied and fell a limn rag I almost as soon as the parachute Woodall I got SlOO for making yesterdays ascent Today there is to be a double ascent as a contest between the Woodalls u Prof Butler for a stake of 300 The balloon which rises the highest and whose parachute para-chute alights first is to carry off tho prize THE BEAUTY CONTEST The evening attendance was the greatest and most enthusiastic of any yet witnessed It was the beauty contest that brought out the ladies in strong force and a more brilliant bril-liant assemblage is seldom seen There was the youth and beauty of Suit Lake assembled in their most brilliant attire and in the best of spirits and the judges hud no easy task in deciding to whom to award the palm At 7 oclock Messrs C R Bar ratt Henry Gillespie L G Hardy Reed Smoot and W R Gibbs the judges set out on their quest for the prettiest girl in the hall and for over two hours they ransacked all over now captivated with one brilliant face and again with another ad infinitum At last by 9 oclock they met in tte secro tarys office to compare notes Meantime tile people were on the tiptoe of excitement and many a female heart was fluttering when the judges emerged from their consultation con-sultation room and made their way to tho band stand for the purpose of announcing the name of the winner Thq band leader blew the call to order and all listened in breathless silence whilst Mr McDaniel came to the front and announced that Miss Lizzie Livingstone of Salt Lake was tha prettiest girl at the fair Then a ringing round of applause followed fol-lowed and loud calls for Miss Livingstone but that was asking too much The modesty mod-esty of the young lady would not permit her to pose before the audience in the enviable en-viable character which had been thrust upon her To escape the crowd she had to take refuge in the secretarys office where she remained with her mother until a carriage car-riage was called when she quietly disappeared disap-peared Miss Livingstone is quite young only sixteen years of age rathor under the 1 average heigh th of women vory graceful r and ladylike in her bearing be has blue black hair coalblack flashing eyes shaded by long fine dark eyelashes and dark delicate eyebrows A clear delicately tinted complexion and a fine modest cast of tace and features She does credit to the taste of the judges who decided the contest con-test in her favor She is a Salt Lake girl the daughter of the late Mr Archibald Livingotone living on Sixth South street I between Third and Fourth East streets rnE SPELLING MATcn which came off yesterday morning created a good deal of interest There wore thirteen thir-teen competitors The prize of 10 was won by Mr J T Holt of this city Tho judges were School Superintendents Dr J F Millspaugh E A WilsonC A Short E W McDaniel and Joseph S Peery Tho general ring parade of HOUSE AND CATTLE I was a prominent feature yesterday afternoon after-noon The graud stand was packed to its utmost capacity and it was really a fine I and imposing spectacle TEE LUCKY TICKET I The 2r 000 tli admission ticket to the purchaser pur-chaser ol which Mr Spencer Clawson cream separated and will render a decision en the best milch cow of any age or breed for dairy purposes quality to be considered and milk to be churned on the ground and also for the best milch cow of any age or breed quantity to be considered Today the baby show will begin at 2pm if the weather permits the contest will take place in the pavilion otherwise in the grandstand grand-stand in the main
