| Show UNITED WE STAND i Cleveland and Hill Speak at the Cooper Union PARTY DOMINATION RATIFIED I lhc eiPresIdent Spoke on the Duty of Democrats Demo-crats The Governor Dwelt on Monetary Issue I Nsw YORK Oct SThe Democrats or this city absetnbled In great throngs at the Cooper I Union this evening to ratify the nominations of the Saratoga convention ExPresident I Cleveland was president ol the meeting I meet-ing and many other notable Democrats were on the stage Tumultous applause greeted I the appearance ol Mr Cleveland the audience I standing bp waving hats and malting all manner man-ner of demonstrations or enthusiasm Nr Cleveland at length obtained silence by waving wav-ing his hand EXPKESIDENT CLEVELAND on taking the chair acknowledged with much satisfaction the compliment paid him by his selection as presiding officer He went on to talk at some length about the issues of the campaign He scored the protective tariff force bill extravagance In government expenditures expen-ditures and arbitrary actions of the Republicans Republi-cans in the last Congress made reference to the determined Democratic battle against these abuses last fall and the victory which resulted In the popular branch of the next Congress said he the party which lately arrogated to itself the domination of that body will fill hardly more than oneIourth its seats Democratic governors occupy oc-cupy the enemys strongholds in Iowa Massachusetts Mas-sachusetts Ohio Wisconsin and Michigan In Pennsylvania the election of a Democratic governor gov-ernor presented conclusive proof of Republican corruption exposed and Republican dishonesty detected but with all these results of a just and fearless Democratic policy our work is not yet completely done and I want to suggest to you that any relaxation of effort within lines established estab-lished by the national Democracy will be violation viola-tion or the pledges we gave people when we invited their cooperation nd undertook their cause Mr Cleveland said he didnt forget that we are immediately concerned con-cerned with a state camnalcn It seemed to him however while national questions of the greatest import are yet unsettled and we are on the evo of a national campaign in which they must bo again pressed upon the attention of oters TilK DKMOCBACY OF THE GREAT STATE of New York cannot and will not ignore them If we fail to retain the ascendancy in the Empire Em-pire slate no matter upon what Issue it is lost and no matter how much our opponents may seek to avoid great and important topics it will be claimed as the verdict of our people against the principles and platform of the national Democracy I am far from having any fear of the result of a full DISCDSSIOK OF STATE AFFAIRS but it does not follow that it is wise in regard to matters of < ational cohcern as entirely foreign to the pending canvass and especially to follow the enemy in their lead entirely away from the i sues they most fear and which they have the best of reasons to dread Those who act with I us merely because they approv d the present position of the national democracy and the re tares we have undertaken and who oppose in national affairs the policy and methods and n ho still think the state campaign we haye on hand has norelationto the nrmciples and policy they approve are in danger of falling into a grave error Our opponents in the pending canvas though now striving hard to hide their identity in the cloud of dust raised by their iteration of irrelevant things constitute a large factor in the party which still far from harmoniously harmon-iously seeks to perpetuate all the wrongs and abuse Kepuoiican rule in national atiairs in the present condition of affairs it is not to be supposed that any consistent and thoughtful memt er of the Democratic organization can fail to see it is his duty to engage enthusasti cally and zealously in support or the ticket and platform which represent our party in this campaign cam-paign At the conclusion of his speech which was frequently interrupted by applause Governor Hill appeared turning to him with a bow and then again to the audience Mr Cleveland said he did not think it necessary to say mere and he could not say less than that Governor Hill was there As the governor stepped for ard he was greeted with applause similar to and as prolonged as that which greeted Cleveland When it subsided ho said GOVERNOR RILL reaffirmed the attitude of the party on the tariff and discussed siver at some length He aid in part Our platform renews the partys pledges of fidelity sound principles of finance it reaffirms the national Democratic platform of ISS which explicitly declaies we believe in honest money the gold and silver coinage of the constitution and a circulating medium con enable into such money without loss That is a declaration of the double standard in favor of bimetallism in favor of gold as well as silver and silver as well as gold It recognized recog-nized no legislative disparagement of one metal to ihe enhancement of the other it makes them both sovereign both legal tender for the payment of debts However honestly f inu g od j J1l individuals of our party may diner as to the means of attaining perfect bimotallism we arc all agreed upon the desirability of attaining that end The Democratic party of today follows fol-lows THE WISDOM OF ITS GREAT FOUNDER Thomas Jefferson when he said The monetary mone-tary unit must stand on both metals We not only reaffirm that part of the declaration of the national platform ISSt but we go further and denounce the present Sherman silver law not merely as authorizing the coinage of a silver dollar whose value is constantly fluctuating but also as a false pretense and artful hindrance hind-rance of a return to free bimetallic coinage and as tending only to produce a change from gold to silver monometallism Thus have wa taken impregnable grouna in favor of honest money Those who would hare run us into collision with our fellow Democrats of other states and thereby wreck Democratic chances for success in 1893 havo had their plan frustrated Our platform unites all Democrats upon the common ground of honest bimctallic coinage Whatever method of attaining I I MRFECT BIMETALLISM the leaders of our party in their wisdom may decide to recommend in our national platform next year the conditions will then determine and we may safely leave the matter to their judgment We have not permitted differences of opinion on that question to intrude in our councils this fall and thereby endanger Democratic Demo-cratic success in this state at this critical election elec-tion Governor Hill said tho responsibility for the loss of the Worlds fair to New York was directly traceable to the Republican candidate can-didate for governor and the Republican leader who dictated and controlled his actions Fas sett deprived New York of the Worlds fair because be-cause he disliked the local officials he hated Xew York because it was a Democratio city and he desired to humiliate it Hill also referred re-ferred to the rumors that at least two of Platt senators associates of Fassett were speculators speculat-ors in Chicago real estate and of course were against New York Frederick R Condert and others also addressed ad-dressed the meeting |
