Show Just Clearing MM And Desk By DAVE WIGHAM With all due respect to Davis fans, last Saturday was a great day. ON A personal note: I took my wife to the hospital at 7 a.m. to deliver our second child. By one in the afternoon nothing had happened and I was due to play a soccer game at 1:30 p.m. I begged her to let me stay with her but she insisted 1 go play soccer. I had been watching the Utah game on TV and I really don't know who was in more agony me or my wife. ANYWAY, OFF I went to the soccer field in Salt Lake City leaving instructions to have my father come get me if anything happened. As luck would have it 1 scored a goal and set up another one in our win over the Pioneers. With just over 15 minutes left to play I heard my father yell my name. He informed me the hospital had called and that 1 better get there in a hurry. I arrived at 3:30 and at 5:05 p.m. my wife delivered a beautiful daughter. Just think I could have finished the game. SPEAKING of the state football tournament, do you realize that two of the semifinalist in the state 4A this year were 3A schools last year? Both Bountiful and Cyprus were in the lower classification so maybe those guys who realign know what they're doing after all! As most of you know by now all four region champions cham-pions lost in the state tournament. That's right all four that had an extra week off are no longer around. SOME FEEL the extra week off killed them. Ward Sawley of Davis was one of them. "We lost our sharpness w ith the lay-off same as Bonneville did." Both Coach Sawley and Paul Waite of Bountiful would like to see the tournament the same as 3A. In 3A the region champions get to play a fourth place team in the opening round, and the region champs get the home field advantage. PALL WAITE summed it up this way. "I would like to see it go back to a 16-team tournament, with the first place teams playing the fourth. If they can t beat the fourth place club then they don't deserve to be there in the first place." Another difference, according to Waite, was the fact there just wasn't that much difference between the clubs. "In each region they were about equal. There wasn't much difference between us and Davis, same with Brighton and Alta. Granite was number one in their region and they beat Cyprus in overtime so you know there wasn't much difference there either." COACH WAITE added that there should be no byes in the state tournament. "Whether that means an eight team event or 1 6. Personally I would love to see it back to 16." It was the coaches that voted this format and they can vote to change it. JOHN W HITE and Brian Taylor were both mentioned men-tioned in Street and Smiths annual basketball preview pre-view this year. John of Viewmont was a high honorable honor-able mention player with Brian of Davis listed as honorable mention all-American. Kyle Morrell of Brigham Young has been seeing more and more playing time in the Cougars secondary secon-dary lately. Kyle, the ex-Viking, comes in to play on certain passing plays. Brandon Flint of Layton has high praise for the freshman defensive back, "he's a player. None of our receivers like to run patterns over his area because they know they'll get hit hard." Brandon has been a leader, along with ex-Lancer ex-Lancer Chuck Ehin, on the defensive front line for BYU. IT WAS good to see the Utah Jazz play some team ball last Saturday night, sure I went to the game. Dantley had 23 points and Ben Poquette added 20. When the Jazz play good team ball and get some of the the other players involved in the offense they can play with almost anyone. SPEAKING of BYU, I was glad to see them let Jim McMahan play the entire game against CSU. They always get accused of running up the score anyway so why not go for it. Head coach LaVell Edwards had the best explanation for it. "I felt we owed it to Jim." Right on. |
