Show NOT THE ASSEMBLY HALL President Woodruff Cannot Give That but the Tabernacle Is Tendered for the Concert In regard to the concert proposed to b3 given by the Choral society in the Asseu bly hal during the session of the Irrigation congress the chamber of commerce yesterday yester-day received the following communication from President Woodruff OlFlCE OF THE FlllST PRESIDENCY OF THE CHURCH OF JESUS Cinusr OF LATTER DAY SAINTS TlEj SALT SAKE CITY UTAH Sept 41S9I Jchn W Donnelleu esq chairman general committee of arrangements and Frank K Gillespie esq secretary GENTLEMEN Wo have considered the questions ques-tions which you submitted to us concerning the grantln g of the tabernacle for the use of a concert con-cert by the Choral society and take pleasure intend tend ering the free use of that building for such concert in the manner proposed in your communication com-munication Respecting the assembly bal we find upon conversation with prominent officers of the church that there is a natural repugnance in their minds to granting permission to occupy that house for any other purpose than the worship wor-ship of Almighty God The building has been dedicated for that purpose and there being a sacred character attached to i in tho minds of tho people Another consideration con-sideration is that if this request were granted there arc so many occasions arising aris-ing from time to time when a building of that capacity and convenience is needed that i per misbion bo granted for Ho use for the purpose of holding therein the irrigation congress it will be difcult for us in the future to decline requests re-quests made upon us by other organizations for equally praiseworthy purposes Behind this there Is also the questionand it is to us a serious seri-ous oneas to our legal right to use the building build-ing for any secular purpose le We regret exceedingly that wo cannot comply with your request concerning the assembly hall but trust that our motives in this will not be misunderstood Wo would gladly do anything In our power to forward the Interests of the congress and to promote its influence for we look upon it as a very important conference and take the liberty of paying that anything that is in our power to do in any direction that may be indicated to furnish facilities or to make the visit and meetings interesting and satisfactory satisfac-tory will be gladly done I am gentlemen very I respectfully WIWOHD WOODRUFF It was learned that night however that the use of the tabernacle bad been tendered by the church authorities and the chamber I of commerce has requested Prof Stephens to give the concert on the night of the 16th The Choral society will meet tomorrow night and dispose of the question but Prof Stephens doubts his ability to give the concert con-cert unless there Is a larger attendance of members of the society than there has been of late I is particularly requested that all members will attend tonight as special I spec-ial programme has been prepared Miss 1 Lincoln the new soprano ana Mr and Mrs Metcalf will take part IRRIGATION NOTES Californias delegates have all been named and all but throe have announced that they will attend the convention Irrigation companies and many others are writing for railroad rates etc saying they will attend The half fare rates on the railways delegates rail-ways are open to the public as well as to |
