| Show iiIiES ILL HEALTh May Have a Decidedly Important Bearing Upon THE POLITICAL EVENIS OF 1893 Ho la the Only Person Who Stands Between Harrison and Uenomlaation Judge Depicts the Secretary as a Chicken Thief ISpecialto THE HERALD Examiner Dispatch WASHINGTON May 14The illness ot Secretary Blame which promises to with draw him temporarily at least from active work in the state department may have an important bearing upon the political events of 1893 It means what has long been known to Mr Elaines friends that ho is in such a delicate state of health that anxiety and overwork break him down This has been his condition ever since ho returned from Europe to enter the cabinet of President Harrison and it is a warning that he must not risk and ho could not stand the wear and tear of another presi dential campaign All talk however about his having given his up longing to bo President of the United States comes from those persons who know nothing about the man There has practically never been a timA in itTr R1ni ho anxious to reach the goal of his lifelong ambition as ho is today Ho knows that as secretary of state ho is the bright par ticular star of the Harrison administration that tho people of the country both Demo orals Republicans regard him as head and shoulders above the President in all the elements that go to make up a popular statesman The closest political advisers of Mr Blaine such men as Stephen B Elkins Manley and others understand very well he is in i the hands of his friends and that he will not frown upon any efforts to increase his popularity To several del egations of Republicans who have sounded him Mr Blaine has let it be known that while he is in no sense a candidate nothing would please him better than a condition of things that would make his nomination by acclamation the only possible outcome of next years convention Judged from what can ha heard in political circles hero at the capital that is just what was likely to happen and what may yet happen in spite of the check which the Blaine boom will re ceive by evidence of what has long been apparent to close observers namely that physically James G Blaine is a broken down man Intellectually ho has for the past few months appeared to hs more keen more adroit and more farseeing than ever It is a matter of great regret therefore but a fact that cannot he disputed that Mr Blame and his friends fear his pres eat illness coupled as it is with the knowl edge of his intimate friends that it is but one attack in a series will have a disastrous effect upon the enthusiasm that has for the past six months been gathering about thoroughly alarmed All winter long ho took the utmost precaution when suffering the slightest ailment and has been constantly con-stantly and zealously watched by physi clans and members of his family ProsE dent Harrison who has viewed with alarm the growing signs of Blainism who has felt the popularity created by his swing around the circle to be completely eclipsed by the greater popularity of his secretary of state will welcome the check to Blaine enthusi asm although deeply regretting its causes Blains is the only person that stands be tween Harrison and renomination rand no one appreciates that fact more fully than the President and his secretary of state |
