prior to tho great race yesterday morning I had become pretty generally known that the most important preparatory work yet done this spring would take place yesterday morning and the result was that the lawns in front of the grand stand and paddock were thronged with visitors The interest in the result of tho various trials was intense Owners and trainers were equally anxious to see i their charges would stand the cruicial test and not bo found wanting at the last moment Soon after sunrise the Santa Anita youngsters filed out of their stables They walked slowly twice around the track They then cantered slowly for three furlongs and were taken back to their quarters In a very few minutes Los Antrolos and Santiago appeared upon ha track Time pair cantered till reacning the quarter post where they broke into a business like gallop They came up the stretch neck and neck but the pace was not as hot as many present anticipated it would be They were pulled up when they had gone a mile The mare covered the distance in 14S and finished fresh and well Santiago got a furlong and did not create a favorable impression by his performance Loantakers work this morning was exceptionally good in fact it was one of the best trials made He negotiated the handicap handi-cap distance in 2OS34 the last mile of which he covered in 142 Riley and Judge Morrow Green Morris Brooklyn handicap candidate worked together to-gether Taylor rode the former and George Covington piloted Judge Morrow After tho warming up they were sent the distance at a business like pace The watches reg il i istered 1 4G3 when ihey swept around the l lower turn and 213 when Judge Morrow passed the judges box Riley was several l lengths away and evidently in difficulties at the finish Adventurer went a mile in 142 Strath meath and Thorndale moved a mile together to-gether The former finished two lengths in front of his stable mate in 1 47w A hundred watches clicked when Bur lington l who had three quarters 118 and mile 1463 513 Castaway Second Cassius and Once Again then had their trial Taylor rode I the last years handicap winner Trial had tho mount on Cassius and Stevenson piloted pi-loted Once Again They raced neck and neck the entire distance and finished heads apart Castaway was first having covered the distance in 212 Cassius was next and Once Again last Neither horse appeared to be any the worse for the gallop The trio finished well and strong The Dryers cavalcade which had been walked around several times then came out with a business air Garrison on Prince Royal and J P Dwyer jr on Eon moved a mile in 144 Prince Royal was fully four lengths in advance of Eon when he was reined in at the judges stand Eon kept up his work until he had gone a mile and an eighth in 202 Sir John and Longford worked a milo in mie l 149 Then Bolero with his legs well bandaged came out with Garrison up The colt broke at the lower turn and made the circuit of the track in 1 4fii4 While round lag the upper turn he stumbled but ronne went on without any noticeable difference He is certainly a grand looking colt and has magnificent action Cousin Jeems set a good many persons thinking by romping over the handicap course in 20934 Ely ton had White Nose for a pace maker and went the full distance in i 214 Kingston worked a mile in 140 with ease Torso went a similar distance in precisely the same time Chaso was sent a milo and a quarter He finished decidedly de-cidedly lamo in 215 Edgar Johnson went once around the track in 1 43g Lavinia Belle did tho handicap distance very easily in 215 Seflorita easiy 2lJ oria astonished a good many by the easy manner in which she went the handicap distance in 2104 Her fractional time was quarter 253 half 51 threequarters l17J mile 14X Carroll the Monmouth park mie showed his liking for the handicap course by going over it with apparent ease in 211 Uncle Bob with Steven on in the saddle and that prince of cripples Terra Cotta came out They made the sensational trial I of the day Uncle Bob finished the fnished one cone c-one and a quarter miles fighting for his head in 20M Terra Cotta was hope lessly beaten The strong and easy way in which the winner of last years Chicago Derby romped homo made a profound impression im-pression on all present His fractional I time was Quarter 2 half 49M three quarters 1 lil milo 142K One of the last handicap candidates to work was Russell who went the distance with his stable companion Terrifier in 212 Both finished and well strong wel Ambulance and Catham then went over the
