Kicking will play an important part ol the Vikmg Wcsl game ami in Curt Mathews the Vikes have a good punter. Viewmont Set Fob" Powerful Panthers brother of Re.egie who was a standout at West a few years hack. NORTON CAN do just about ab-out everything on a football field. He can run and pass and already he has one punt return for a touchdown to Ins credit this season. As for the Vikings ("ory added, "We know they run a lot especially with Caputo to the outside. He's a great runner run-ner but they'll have to do something more than just run to beat us. Wc have a great I) that can stop the run. We knyw wc beat them d twice last yea but we ha. . to forget about ab-out those games. We can't look past them." INDKH) THE Vikes will look to Steve lor the running game but last week the two fullbacks. Troy l.arsen and Scott Hubbard, showed they can tirim! out some yardage when needed. Doug Lee is getting get-ting belter each game and his passing could be a key to this game Lee will look to speedsters speeds-ters Curt Mathews, who suffered suf-fered a slight concussion against l ayton but who will , play. Jeff Porter who made some good catches and Doug Scovill w ho is seeing more and more playing time each game. The tightend spot is another plus for the Vikes. Junior Kevin Smith is a good receiver and senior Anthony Skedros played extremely well in the Layton win. ONE QUESTION mark for the Vikes is the condition of senioi lineman Greg Hoothe. Greg has a sore knee that will require an orthoscope and the results are unknown at this point. They'll miss him il he is unable to play. There are no seuets about these two clubs. Fsery time the game is won or lost up front in the trenches where the Panthers dominated last yeai. This year the Vikes hae shown a lot of promise up Iront. they are small but they II mix it up with anyone. MR. NOR! ON has taken Cory to see a lot of the Viewmont View-mont games and when asked if he'll he there watching them this week he simply replied, "Yea. 1 think I'll be there." (iame time is 7:3(1 p.m. under the lights al Viewmont which iiuiiks their fusi home game ol ihe season. By DAVE WIGHAM BOUNTIFUL - Well here they are again. It seems like every other month or so the West football team comes into town to battle Viewmont. l ace il this is turning into a rivalry of sorts. LAST YEAR the Panthers came into town and completely complete-ly ran over the Vikings in league play. Then both sides found each other across the line in the state finals. Again the Panthers ran all over them. So here they come again. This time though there won't be a league record on the line or a state title. This one is for practice, the old preseason game as they like to call it. But don't kid yourself, these two clubs w ill go after each others' throats like everything in the world depends on it. SOME OF the faces from both sides are gone from the two games last year, but some of them remain. One name that is still around and very familiar to Vikings fans is that of Cory Norton w ho is the starting quarterback for the Panthers this season. Cory is the one with the father, Doyle, leaching at Viewmont. NOT ONLY that but he figured fi-gured in both victories last year. In the first meeting he returned a punt for a touchdown touch-down and in the second one he played a solid game in the defensive de-fensive secondary before leav-ing leav-ing with a broken foot. "For some reason the View mont game has become a i iv airy ai-ry for us. You could ask our plavers who play for some clubs and they don't know but they know w ho plays for Viewmont. View-mont. Some of our players just don't like the Davis County schools or playeis." noted Cory. WE ALL know about the great club the P.niil.ci s had last ear bill what about this side they bung to town this week. Opening game they were soundly beaten by Highland, then last week they turned around and hammered Last. "We just went back to two a day practice sessions and got our act together" admitted Cory about the differences in the two outings. One thing different on the W est side this season is then line, l ast yeai they had no less than four all-staters on the line and that's where the Panthers dominated opponents. This year they have a new hue. I-OR THE Vikes to have a shot at winning their line will have to control the line of scrimmage. Jerry Miller. Brent Home. Craig Roberts. Maik I aw and P.n..n Spencer have been playing eviremely well for lust year man Mark Pierce and they'll need another great tltort in ihis outing. West will do a htileot everything every-thing on offense. Runnmgwise . they look to Jim Williams and Brad l.efler although they do . alternaletwootherbacks Pas- . sing wise Mr. Norton looks to tightend Jeff Nemelka or split . man 1 ony W ilson. the y oimger |
