Show MKIXLEI LOSIAG hOPE At the recent meeting of the executive committee of tho national Republican committee I com-mittee a letter was read from Major McKINLEY Mc-KINLEY appealing for pecuniary aid saying say-ing that it would be impossible to carry Ohio without such aid and complaining I that his applications to the protected manufacturers i manu-facturers of Pennsylvania for assistance II had met with no responses At least it was published at the time that such a letter let-ter was read although it was denied by I newspapers claiming to be on the inside Now comes confirmation in the statement that McKiNLET has visited the Pittsburg manufacturers in person and Informed them that unless they contribute 40OOJ to his campaign fund he will bo defeated and thus the great Buckeye state will repudiate re-pudiate tho principle of protection and give the death blow to Republicanism j It is also reported that the manufacturers I I did not respond with any sort of generosity I and some of them went so far as to say that i so much fat had been fried out of them for I political purposes that they were embarrassed embar-rassed and would have to call a halt in I giving until they could recuperate This would indicate that tne situation is desperate with MCKINLEY so desperate in fact that he regards his election as little else than hopeless The price of wool has gone down so much under tho operation of his bill that the sheepowners havo deserted MCKINLEY and are working for CiMinELL But there is another element in the business busi-ness which is troublesome McKiNLErls the candidate and representative of the administration and is therefore supposed to represent the antiBLAixs ring of the Republican party The executive committee of the national Republican committee is for BLAINE as against HARRISON and everybody else and it is known that BLAINE docs not like the new protective law which he has publicly and privately denounced on numerous num-erous occasions It would not be grievous to the Maine statesman were MCKINLEy defeated and it is not at all unlikely that the executive committee would be quite as highly pleased as Mr BLINE to see the champion of high taxes and the HARRISON administration shelved |
