Show Utah Judiciary I Elsewhere we republish an article taken from THE HERALD of Jan 4 1889 entitled en-titled as above The reading of this bit of history will recall to the people of Utah how Mr CLEVELANDS appointees were treated as soon as Mr HARRISON found himself well seated in the Presidential Presi-dential chair The removal of Judge SANDFORD was for the reason and for no other reason as is plainly stated in the AttorneyGenerals letter that his the judges administration of the office was not in harmony with the policy he the president deemed proper to be pursued pur-sued with reference to Utah affairs Of course this was simply infamous and now as then stinks in the nostrils of a free people But the real purpose upon the part of THE HERALD in bringing this matter forward for-ward at this time is that the people may make a note of what is transpiring now and make the contrast What the policy of President HARRISON was that he wanted Judge SANDFORD to pursue in his administration of the law the people were not at that time informed but a Republican paper published at Provo has inits editorials recently said that orders or-ders had gone out from Washington that the antipolygamy laws should be enforced en-forced with more leniency This is refreshing re-freshing to say the least of it We wonder won-der how Judge ZANE likes this S Butwhy not have some removing now Why not remove Judges BLACKBURN BARTCH and MINER Here are three judges that are so confessedly incompetent incompe-tent that they are not capable of administering adminis-tering either law or policy When Judge BLACKBURN was appointed he did not have the endorsement of a single practicing lawyer of the territory When he was confirmed it was done over the written protest of every lawyer at the bar where he had held court for four months And after he had held court there for three and onehalf years every lawyer at that bar united in a request re-quest to him to resign which he promised to do but now refuses and in consequence conse-quence of his refusal the Provo bar by unanimous action backed by the lawyers of both Salt Lake and Ogden have requested re-quested the President to remove him And knowing all this he yet sticks How about Judge BARTOn There were not ten lawyers in the Territory who endorsed en-dorsed him for the position but sixtyone including nearly all the leading lawyers and law firms in the Territory protested against his confirmation con-firmation and his competency is so confessed that even the Republican paper the Tribune ridicules him for his assinine charges to the grand jury and yet he sticks As to Judge MINER we are informed in-formed that the Ogden bar has practically practi-cally agreed thathe be superseded and w the President 1 vhas been asked to take early action in the matter mat-ter No one pretends that Judge MINER is competent to the duties of the position and to use the language of a leading attorney at-torney of the Salt Lake bar he is worse than the other two This is the judiciary that Mr HARRISON gave the people of Utah administer his policy If Mr r CLEVELAND is the friend to our people that we believe him to be he will let theaxe fall here quick and fast |
