Show METHODIST MISSION OPENING OF THE AXXtlAIi CONFERENCE CONFER-ENCE HERE YESTERDAY The Officers Elected and Routine Business Transacted Annual Missionary Mis-sionary Sermon by Rev Jos Wilks Last Evening The Utah Mission conference of the Mefhodist Episcopal church met for its twentyfourth annual session in the First Methodist Episcopal church of this city yesterday morning at 9 oclock Bishop Stephen M Merrill D D presiding pre-siding After the singing of a hymn the bishop read appropriate selections of scripture and then announced as a second sec-ond hymn the 316th selection in the Methodist hymnalHow Sweet the Name of Jesus Sounds etc After this hymn was sung by the congregation the bishop proceeded to administer the Lords supper assisted by Drs Illff Mabry Gillilan and Jayne The business began with the roll call by Rev J D Gillilan secretary of the last session About twenty members of the mission responded to their names On motion of Dr Iliff Mr Gillilan was reelected secretary by acclamation I acclama-tion Messrs Snow Hardman and Billings lings were chosen by the secretary as his assistants Joseph Wilks was elected elect-ed as treasurer statistical secretary and T C Iliff The hours of session were agreed upon from 9 to 12 oclock The various standing committees were then nominated and elected Dr T C Hiff then read his annual report as superintendent of the mission mis-sion which on motion was adopted by the conference and a part of it referred to the committee on education Presiding Elder Gillilan also read his report his district embracing the whole territory These reports of superintendent superinten-dent and presiding elder contained many intesesting facts and figures and were listened to with close attention by those present After these reports were read the following fol-lowing visiting clergy were introduced to the conference by the bishop B H Hetzler agent of the American Bible o socfety C Bradford of the Colorado conference T J Hooper a recent supply sup-ply in the mission and Messrs Holm feldt Hermann Erickson and Johnson of the Norwegian and Danish work in the territory The following elective elders were called their characters passed and their collections for benevolences olections reported re-ported T C Iliff J D Gillilan E H Snow R 11 Hardman Joseph Wilks G P Miller G 11 Jeffrey G W Rich W D Mabry G E Wayinck G E Jayne and John Telfer On call of the treasurer the moneys I collected for benevolences during the i year were turned over to Assistant Treasurer Hooper Miscellaneous business was called for at this point and Dr Iliff stated plans for celebrating the twentyfifth anniversary anni-versary of the beginning of Methodist work in Utah at the next annual session ses-sion On motion a committee of three consisting of Drs Iliff Jayne and Gil lilan was appointed to arrange for such a celebration a year hence Reports were next called for from the various schools under control of the Mission John Telfer reported for the school at Payson Miss Smith for that at Murray Mr Hartshorn for that at Nephi Miss Dimmick for Grantsville Miss Franklin for Greenwich and Mr Nelson for the several Scandinavian schools under his charge A report from the Womans Home Missionary society was read by the secretary sec-retary and referred to the committee on education and also to the committee on womans home missions After announcements of committee I meeting for the afternoon the morning morn-ing session was adjourned with the benediction by Bishop Merrill At 8 p m a large gathering heard the annual missionary sermon preached I by Rev Joseph Wilks |
