and Geodetic Survey who was one of the pioneer pion-eer explorers of Alaska takes a deep interest in-terest In the reports of volcanic disturbances disturb-ances in the far north When scan by a Chronicle man he said There is really nothing remarkable about the recent volcanic disturbances in Alaska although the event ic of interest The whole coast of Alaska out to the cast of the Aleutian Islands is the volcanic and glacial region of the world It is quite to be expected almost every week that some of the numerous volcanos along that rugged rug-ged coast will break forth fill the air with cinders ashes and smoke and cover the glaciers with nasty blacii band and soot Ohignik Bay from which this last eruption was seen is in latitude 50 deg 19 mm iiO sec north and longitude 15S > deg 21 mm 25 sec west of Greenwich on the outhoast coast of the peninsula of Alaska opposite the Semidi islands and about 300 miles from the end of the peninsula The observer could not have seen Black peak as reported for it is only twentylour miles westnorthwest from his position lie saw Mount PavIof on the west side of 1avlof bay distant about 148 miles south 42 deg west from Chignik bay The man who was at Wesnessonkl island lying oft Pailof bay saw Pavlof volcano distant from him twentynmo miles north 68 dog west Pnvlof Is one of the fifty volcanoes of the peninsula of Alaska and the Aleutian Islands of which twentyfive are in a state of activity shown by smoking Just west of Pavlof about ten miles lies a cluster of peaks called Aghileou pinnacles which are all marked by craters Pavlof is in latitude lati-tude 55 degrees 27 minutes north longitude longi-tude 161 degrees 47 minutes west and it has two craters hln 1764 and 17SG according to Russian authorities Pavlof was active In Ib3t it was smoking and In 1867 I saw it myself Pavlof is visible from the Shumagln islands of which Megaa is the largest The view is particularly good from Sand harbor on Megas island I shall not be surprised to learn of more eruptions in that locality at any time for as I said before be-fore it is the volcanic region of the whole world San Francisco Chronicle I The Leaders in Footwear 124
