Show BUSINESS AXD THE XEW TARIFF The Republican papers which are predicting great disasters from the passage pas-sage of the new tariff bill and which know better but are taking that course for the purpose of making some gains if possible In this years ejections are taken sharply to task by the St Louis GlobeDemocrat as strong a Republican Republi-can paper as there is in the country It considers they are making a serious blunder That paper is honest enough to acknowledge ac-knowledge that an improvement in business has already taken place and keen enough to perceive that a denial of this and continued presages of evil will only damage the cause they are intended to promote It sa sAn s-An improvement in business marked enough to be seen by everybody who wants to see has taken place since the bill was sent to the president The improvement im-provement was noticed in the stock market first and then it was seen in the loan item In the statement of the banks of New York and other great cities Stocks are higher than they were before the bill was passed and money is in greater demand Undoubtedly Undoubt-edly these changes bear the relation to the passage of the bill of effect to cause As to the predicted ills to follow the tariff reform law it declares there is not the faintest probability that any of them will take place Concerning the disturbances in trade consequent upon the uncertainty through the contemplated contem-plated changes that paper believes they will quickly end business will have something solid on which to base its calculations the changed conditions condi-tions can be promptly measured and the readjustments will be soon made Its able article on the subject closes with these words The changes in duties on the whole are not radical enough to affect industries indus-tries injuriously Two or three months hence the improvement in business will be so marked and persistent that the croakers of today will be confounded and humiliated Partisan capital cannot can-not be made out of the gloomy vaticin ations which emanate from certain Republican Re-publican journals and statesmen at this time The Democratic party may be beaten in the congressional elections and ought to be but it will be helped rather than hurt by prognostications which a few weeks time will prove to be false In the fall elections a few changes will probably take place in representative representa-tive districts but the Democratic party will retain a working majority in Congress The country would commit a great act of folly by changing the political complexion of that body The Democratic party should be given a fair opportunity to see what it can do to redeem the land from the distress consequent upon a long career of misrule mis-rule by the Republican party The people of Utah should not be misled by blatant stump speakers who are seeking to deceive them by just such presages of evil as those which the GlobeDemocrat explodes And they should be able to see that on the retention of power by that party Which has done so much for Utah in so short a time lies the hope of the territory while it lasts and the new state when it is organized for those benefits that are needed in this region |
