Show THE TEXXESSSEE IVXQHIXG The lynching of six negroes charged with the crime of arson near Milling ton Tenn Is a horrible affair and without justification The men were in charge of officers and were hand cuffed and manacled and the manner in which they were shot down was murder pure and simple These men in the eyes of the law were innocent and no matter how strong the evidence against them they were entitled to a fair and impartial trial and to presenttheir defence Not only has murder been committed but the commonwealth of Tennessee has been outraged and her laws set at defiance de-fiance The courts in that state are able to protect its citizens and will do so Nothing can be more certain than that no negro accused of arson if the evidence produced at the trial were against him would escape justice at the hands of a jury In Tennessee Hav the people of that state no faith In their own laws and courts If they have not they pay her but a poor compliment com-pliment Lynching is lawlessness anywhere and is a disgrace to the country It is the very highest expression of contempt con-tempt for law and order and its presence pres-ence shows more strongly than anything any-thing else a lack of civilization We have liberty in the United States and we are not slow to boast of our superiority superi-ority to other nations yet in no other country occupying the same position among the nations of the earth could such a thing as this lynching happen Contrast this scene with that at Lyons when President Carnot was stricken down by the hand of the anarchist assassin as-sassin Santo France in the hour of Tier greatest sorrow gave to the world an example of the supremacy of law that was sublime and challenged the admiration of mankind This detflora ble lynching will be seized upon to make political capital out of Already Fred Douglass the most distinguished member of his race says there is a reign of terror in the South for political purposes It is natural that he should say so but any utterances pf his on the subject will betaken be-taken with allowances This affair at Milllngton will be condemned con-demned by the whole country and those who participated In it should be apprehended if possible and brought to justice and the good name of Tennessee Ten-nessee vindicated |
